What did the Lakers give Lebron James for breaking the all-time NBA scoring record?
Lebron James overtook Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s top scorer of all-time last month. Now he has another personal memento.
LeBron James’ list of achievements in the NBA already made impressive reading before he finally logged the ultimate entry last month when he became the top scorer of all-time in the best basketball league in the world.
The 38-year-old Lakers forward, now in his 20th season in the NBA, edged past Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to take a points record which had stood for 34 years. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ended his career in 1989 with 38,387 points, one of several NBA records on his retirement (most career games: 1560, most field goals: 15,837 and most minutes played: 57,446).
The record finally fell on 7 February this year after weeks of speculation. Lebron went into the Lakers’ clash with Oklahoma City Thunder at the Crypto.com Arena requiring 36 points. With 20 seconds left in the third quarter, he pinged in a fadeaway shot to make history. Even though the Lakers couldn’t celebrate the moment with a victory, history had finally been made.
The NBA’s all-time points record is the latest in a long line of achievements which include:
To celebrate LeBron’s new points record, the Lakers presented their star with a specially-commissioned commemorative pendant. Fashioned in solid gold and set in diamonds, the piece was designed and created by New York-based jewelers Eliantte and Co. The custom-made pendant features a lion’s head with the player’s initials and the numbers he has worn during his career: 23 and 6. On the reverse are the logos of the three teams he has played for (Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and the Lakers) along with a list of his stats. It is bordered by the words proclaiming his new title, in capital letters: “NBA All-Time Leading Scorer”.
