Update:

Ten-time NBA All-Star Anthony Davis is set to leave the Dallas Mavericks, just one year after arriving as part of the blockbuster trade that saw Luka Doncic head to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Davis will join the Washington Wizards in an eight-player trade that also includes drafts picks. ESPN reports that Dallas are trying to increase their flexibility as they look to build for the future behind 19-year-old sensation Cooper Flagg.

Davis, now 32, was brought to strengthen the Mavericks’ win-now potential but a series of injuries have prevented him from having a major impact. He has played just 29 games in Dallas and the team are no closer to a championship this year.

Full details of the Anthony Davis to Wizards trade

Despite his struggles Davis remains a genuine superstar in the NBA and the Mavs were able to extract a significant package in return. Alongside Davis, the Mavs will send Jaden Hardy, D’Angelo Russell and Dante Exum to the Wizards. In return, the Wizards will send Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, Malaki Branham, and Marvin Bagley III, along with two first-round draft picks and three second-round picks.

The eight-player deal will significantly reshape both rosters, changing the dynamics for the Dallas roster build. Dallas have managed to shift Davis’ huge salary, with $58.5 million in guaranteed payments for next season and a player option worth $62.8 million for the following year. After the departure of Davis, Hardy and Russell, the Mavericks payroll for next season has dipped to around $150 million.

Conversely, the Wizards have completed a second statement trade after Trae Young arrived from the Atlanta Hawks last month. With Davis and Young the Wizards are clearly looking to turbo-charge the team’s development with proven NBA performers.
