Update:

ESPN and SCNEXT have taken a major step into new territory, signing two of the nation’s top high school basketball prospects - Kaleena Smith and Beckham Black - to merchandising agreements that signal a shift in how elite prep athletes are being marketed.

Smith, widely regarded as the No. 1 girls player in the SCNEXT 100, and Black, the No. 2 boys player in his class, become the first high school athletes ever tied to official ESPN-branded NIL merchandise initiatives. The move places both players at the center of a rapidly expanding high school NIL ecosystem, where elite prospects are now building commercial brands before ever stepping onto a college campus.

What is SCNEXT 100?

SCNEXT 100 is ESPN’s ranking system for the top high school basketball prospects in the United States, tracking elite talent across boys’ and girls’ basketball. The list is widely used by scouts, college programs, and media outlets as a benchmark for future NBA and WNBA prospects.

The addition of merchandising deals tied to the ranking marks a notable expansion of how ESPN is positioning its high school coverage, not just as evaluation, but as a commercial platform.

Who are Kaleena Smith and Beckham Black?

Kaleena Smith is one of the most decorated young guards in the country, a consensus top-ranked player in her class and a standout known for elite scoring and playmaking. She has already drawn national attention through USA Basketball involvement and high-level AAU competition.

Beckham Black, meanwhile, is a dynamic point guard prospect and the younger brother of Orlando Magic guard Anthony Black. He is considered one of the most closely watched guards in the 2027 cycle and continues to rise in national rankings.

What this means

This development reflects a bigger change in amateur basketball. The line between prospect and brand is disappearing earlier than ever.

High school stars are now entering structured NIL partnerships that give them national visibility years before the NBA or college spotlight, raising new questions about recruiting, exposure, and commercialization in youth sports.
