What to watch this summer: Sports schedule of what’s to come this summer
The NBA Finals led right into the US Open, but now you may be feeling a bit empty in the slowest season of the sports year. Here’s what to watch until things pick up.
It’s summer time, and that means it’s time to hit the beach, fire up the BBQ and enjoy a little bit of R&R under the sun. We are far from peak sport season, but there are plenty of events in the upcoming months that will keep you entertained on those rainy days when you have to stay indoors and plop yourself infront of the TV for a few hours.
MLB
Each and every year around this time is the MLB’s time to shine. It’s the only major American sport that is still in play as, basketball’s and hockey’s season just wrapped up and we still have a while before we can even start talking about football. We are about to reach the midway point of the 162 game season and that means the All-Star weekend is quickly approaching. Teams will take a short respite from the long, rigorous season from the 8th to the 11th of July as the best players in the world head to Seattle to put their skills on display for the Mid Summer Classic.
Wimbeldon
The third of four grand slam tennis tournament’s will start at the beginning of July as the All England Club prepares for the Wimbledon Championships which start on July 3rd. Elena Rybakina and Novak Djokovic will defend their 2022 titles, and will be targeting another appearance in the final on the 15th and 16th of July. Djokovic has won the opening two grand slams and will be gunning for a third as he aims to complete the calendar slam for the first time in his career.
The Open
We are fresh off Wyndham Clark’s first ever major championship after he held off Rory McIlroy and the rest of the pack from Los Angeles Country Club on Sunday evening. Golfers will have just under a month to gear up for The Open Championship that will be played at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Merseyside, England. Cam Smith has a chance to go back-to-back in The Open, but he will be looking to fend off Clark, the World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and McIlroy who is desperately seeking his first major since 2014. He will get his last chance of this year starting July 20th until July 23rd.
NFL Preseason
By the end of The Open Championship, we will almost be able to whiff the pig skin and hear the cracking of pads with the NFL Preseason right around the corner. Per tradition, the preseason will start in Canton, Ohio with the NFL Hall of Fame Game that will culminate the a weekend of celebrating legends like Darrelle Revis, Joe Thomas, DeMarcus Ware and others who will be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Aaron Rodgers is unlikely to suit up with his new team the New York Jets as they take on the hometown team, the Cleveland Browns on Thursday, August 3rd. The preseason will keep us entertained with 49 games from the 3rd until the 26th of August. That will lead us into Week 1, which starts with the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Detroit Lions from Arrowhead on the 7th of September.
NCAA Football
Not to worry, that little gap between preseason football and regular season football will be filled by the college kids as the NCAA kicks off their season from Ireland in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic as Notre Dame take on the Naval Academy from Dublin, Ireland on August 26th. There will be seven games that weekend, and then the following Saturday the rest of the FBS teams will start their season.
US Open
The final even of the summer will be the fourth and final grand slam of the year. By that time, it’s very possible that Novak Djokovic is looking to become just the third player ever to complete the calendar slam. The opening rounds of the US Open from Flushing Medows will start on August 28th and stretch until the 10th of September. French Open runner-up Carlos Alcaraz will look to defend his title, and get revenge on Djokovic after losing to him in Roland Garrros. French Open women’s Champion Iga Swiatek will be hoping to win a second straight grand slam and go back-to-back in New York after winning it all last year.
