The loss to the Connecticut Suns was only the beginning. A massive 36-point horror-show followed from the New York Liberty on Thursday night, a game which taught Indiana Fever newbie Caitlin Clark the harsh realities of the elite level. As well as keeping Caitlin’s feet on the ground, it also put manager Christie Sides under early season pressure to perform, with some already tipping her to lose her job.

Sides called the home opener “unacceptable” and said her team have “got to do a better job. We’ve got to make the fans proud”.
