When was the last time the Knicks made the NBA Finals? History, titles, and last win
The Knicks are back in the Finals, but when were they last here, and how often have they won it all? Here’s their full championship history.
The New York Knicks are heading back to the NBA Finals, ending a drought that stretched across generations of fans. So how long has it really been, and how successful have they been on the big stage?
When was the last time the Knicks made the NBA Finals?
Before this season, the Knicks’ most recent Finals appearance came in 1999, when they made a surprising run as a No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference. That team ultimately fell to the San Antonio Spurs in five games.
That 1999 run marked the franchise’s last trip to the Finals for more than two decades, a drought that has now officially come to an end with their 2026 return.
Have the Knicks ever won an NBA championship?
Yes, but it has been a long time. The Knicks have won two NBA championships in franchise history, capturing titles in 1970 and 1973. Both victories came against the Los Angeles Lakers and were led by Hall of Fame center Willis Reed.
The 1970 championship remains one of the most iconic in NBA history, highlighted by Reed’s dramatic Game 7 return from injury. Three years later, the Knicks defeated the Lakers again to secure their second and most recent title. Since then, the team has come close but has not been able to finish the job.
Knicks Finals history: appearances and record
Overall, the Knicks have appeared in the NBA Finals eight times, posting a 2–6 record in those series. Their appearances have been spread across multiple eras:
- Three straight trips in the early 1950s (’50, ’52, ’53 - all losses)
- Three appearances in the 1970s (’70, ‘72, ‘73 - including both championships)
- Two appearances in the 1990s (’94 and ’99 - both losses)
Their 1994 team, led by Patrick Ewing, came particularly close, pushing the Houston Rockets to seven games before falling just short.
The 2026 NBA Finals
For longtime fans, this year’s run represents a rare return to relevance in the NBA Finals. The Knicks have not lifted the championship trophy since 1973, meaning they enter this Finals still chasing their first title in over 50 years.
At the same time, their last appearance in 1999 is distant enough that many younger fans have never seen the Knicks in the Finals at all. That makes this moment a unique intersection of history and opportunity for one of the league’s most iconic franchises.
With two championships, eight Finals appearances, and decades of near-misses, the Knicks’ history is both rich and unfinished. Now, with another chance in front of them, they have an opportunity to add a new chapter, and potentially end one of the longest title droughts in the NBA.
