Mac McClung emerged as the talk of All-Star Saturday, stealing the headlines. Prior to the weekend, the former G-League player was relatively unknown, but his performance, featuring four awe-inspiring dunks, turned him into a household name among NBA fans, picking up the $100,000 prize to boot.

Notably, three of his dunks earned a flawless score of 50, including the two dunks he executed in the final round against Trey Murphy. But eyebrows were raised when he added a prop to his final slam, placing a Gate City jersey on top of what he was already wearing.

What’s with McClung and Gate City?

As you may now know, in the 2021-22 G League season, McClung earned the title of Rookie of the Year by averaging 21.6 points, 7.6 assists, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.4 steals across 27 games while playing for the South Bay Lakers and Windy City Bulls. Furthermore, McClung made history as the inaugural G League player to participate in the All-Star Weekend Dunk Contest. His passion for slamming dates back to his high school days at Gate City, where he first began dunking during his sophomore year. Ah yes, that’s what it was all about.

Gate City is a town in Scott County, Virginia, with a population of around 2,000, and in 1886 Attorney General Rufus A. Ayers pointed out that proximity to Big Moccasin Gap marked the town as the “Gate Way to the West.”

With a rich history of producing talented basketball players, including the famous NBA player, Bobby “The Bounce Pass King” Croft, the new star to emerge just slammed the hell out of our competition, earning him a shout out from Mr 3-pointer, Steph Curry.
