It’s another NBA season, and as has become customary in recent years, Mexico is once again the preferred destination for some of the most coveted games in the world. The wait is getting shorter, and the day to witness some of the best players on the planet is approaching. This event promises not only a showcase of top-tier sports but also a celebration of tradition and festivity.

Over the past three decades, both exhibition and regular season games have captivated Mexican basketball fans; however, never in the history of the NBA Global Games had a game been scheduled on such a special date for Mexican fans, such as November 2, better known as the ‘Day of the Dead’ or ‘Dia de Los Muertos.’

A historic day of the dead with NBA overtones

This year, the Miami Heat and the Washington Wizards will face off at the Mexico City Arena in a highly emotional matchup. The game is set against the backdrop of a national celebration, and fans are eager to witness the various stars of the American NBA and how they participate in the All Souls' Day tradition.

The name ‘Miami Heat’ was strategically chosen to evoke a sense of nationalism, especially given that the team has on its roster Jaime Jaquez, who is expected to become one of the most outstanding Mexican athletes on the international professional stage. At just 23 years old and in his second season in the world’s premier basketball league, he will return for the second time to his roots, even though the Wizards are technically the local team on paper.

The tradition of Halloween or Dia de los Muertos

From pre-Hispanic times to the present day, the reverence for death has remained a profound tradition and an essential aspect of Mexican cultural identity.

This practice, deeply rooted in their history, carries great significance as it honors the memories of their loved ones who have passed away. Over the years, how this tradition is celebrated has evolved, yet the essence remains—a heartfelt tribute that allows connecting with those who are no longer here.

Every year, vibrant offerings are created, adorned with an abundance of colorful flowers and flickering candles. These elements help the deceased find their way back to the world of the living during this special time. In addition to flowers and candles, we prepare and present the favorite foods and beverages of the deceased, symbolizing our love and remembrance.

This year, the NBA will undoubtedly contribute to the celebration, recognizing the importance of this beautiful holiday. By joining forces with Mexico, they will help ensure this meaningful occasion is honored and cherished, preserving the connection between the living and the departed through shared customs and festivities. Together, we will celebrate life, death, and the enduring legacies of those who came before us.
