Why are the Clippers being investigated? Kawhi Leonard controversy explained
The NBA is probing a Kawhi Leonard deal tied to a fraud case. Here’s what’s being investigated and what it could mean for the Clippers.
The NBA is investigating the Los Angeles Clippers, but not for anything that happened on the court. Instead, the league is trying to determine whether the team may have violated salary cap rules through an off-court business deal involving star forward Kawhi Leonard. The situation has become even more complicated after a major fraud case connected to that deal reached a key turning point.
Here’s what’s actually going on.
What is the NBA investigating?
At the center of the investigation is a $28 million endorsement deal Kawhi Leonard signed with a financial firm called Aspiration. This sort of deal is not unusual at all. NBA players regularly sign endorsement deals with outside companies.
However, the question the league is asking is whether the Clippers played a role in arranging that deal in a way that effectively gave Leonard extra, hidden compensation. If the answer is yes, it could be a violation of the NBA’s salary cap rules.
The NBA operates under a salary cap system designed to limit how much teams can spend on players. That system is meant to keep competition balanced across the league. Teams are not allowed to get around those limits by paying players “off the books” through third-party arrangements.
If a team were found to have helped set up an outside deal as a way to compensate a player beyond the cap, it would be considered circumvention, a serious violation.
What could happen if the Clippers broke the rules?
If the NBA determines that the Clippers improperly facilitated Leonard’s deal, the penalties could be significant.
Potential consequences include:
- A multi-million dollar fine
- Loss of draft picks
- The possibility of voiding Leonard’s contract
That last outcome is rare, but it is possible, and shows just how seriously the league treats salary cap violations.
Where does the fraud case come in?
This is where the story becomes more complicated. Aspiration, the company tied to Leonard’s deal, has been at the center of a federal fraud case. Its co-founder, Joseph Sanberg, was recently sentenced to 14 years in prison after pleading guilty to defrauding investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars.
That case is separate from the NBA investigation, but the two are now connected. Sanberg has reportedly cooperated with investigators, providing information and documentation that could help the NBA better understand how the deal with Leonard came together. So the fraud case may be giving the league new insight into whether any rules were broken.
What is Steve Ballmer’s role?
Clippers owner Steve Ballmer is also part of the story. Ballmer invested tens of millions of dollars into Aspiration and has argued that he was misled by the company. He has positioned himself as a victim of the fraud, not a participant in any wrongdoing.
At the same time, his investment and the team’s relationship with Aspiration are part of what investigators are examining. That creates a complicated dynamic, with a key witness (Sanberg) whose credibility has been questioned, an owner (Ballmer) who says he was deceived, and the league trying to piece together what actually happened.
When will there be a decision?
The NBA has not publicly commented on the status of the investigation, but a resolution is expected after the NBA Finals. The NBA Draft is approaching, and the Clippers currently hold multiple picks that could be affected if penalties are handed down.
Until the league announces its findings, the situation remains unresolved. But with major stakes for the Clippers and the NBA as a whole, a decision is likely coming soon.
