Update:

The Chicago Bulls are entering a major transition after Billy Donovan stepped down as head coach following six seasons, but the reason behind his exit may be more strategic than it initially appeared.

According to reports, the Bulls made it clear they wanted Donovan to remain with the organization. He even had the option to return next season and was offered the opportunity to stay long-term, potentially in a different role. Instead, Donovan chose to step away.

A “clean break” during a front office reset

Rather than a fallout, Donovan’s departure appears tied directly to sweeping organizational changes.

Earlier this month, Chicago parted ways with top executives Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley after a six-year run that produced just one playoff appearance. With the franchise now searching for a new lead decision-maker, Donovan opted to step aside and allow that incoming executive to hire their own head coach.

Donovan recognized that a new front office typically wants control over its coaching staff and rather than complicate that process, he removed himself from the equation.

Donovan wasn’t pushed out. In fact, Bulls leadership had publicly backed him, with team president Michael Reinsdorf previously emphasizing the organization’s belief in the veteran coach.

A Hall of Famer with a long track record of success, Donovan is expected to remain a strong candidate for future openings across both the NBA and college basketball.

What this means for the Bulls

The Bulls are now searching for a new head of basketball operations, with several high-level candidates already being linked to the role. That hire will ultimately shape everything, from roster decisions to the next head coach.

It also raises bigger questions about the team’s direction. Will the next executive choose to build around veterans like Zach LaVine, or finally initiate a long-discussed rebuild? The coaching hire will likely provide the first real clue.

What comes next?

The Bulls now have two critical decisions ahead: hiring a new top executive and, shortly after, a new head coach.

Reports indicate Chicago hopes to have its front office in place around the NBA Draft Combine in May, which would allow that new leadership group to immediately shape the roster and coaching staff.

As for Donovan, his decision to step away may ultimately benefit both sides. Chicago gets a fresh start with full alignment from top to bottom. And Donovan, still highly respected across basketball, becomes one of the most intriguing coaching names to watch moving forward.
