Another “bad call” by ref Tony Padilla adds to March Madness controversy in BYU-Alabama game
Longtime college basketball referee Tony Padilla is under fire again for a bad call in the NCAA Tournament’s BYU vs Alabama Sweet 16 game.
Tony Padilla has been a college basketball referee for 22 years, and yet he’s known for inserting himself in big moments rather than letting the players dictate what happens. Just one month ago, Padilla came under fire for a bad call that gave BYU a win over Arizona, and he’s yet to be forgiven by Arizona fans for that.
Now, it’s BYU’s turn to be livid.

No. 6 BYU is facing No. 2 Alabama in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament, and although the Crimson Tide are dominating, BYU fans are still reeling from another poor call by Padilla.
BYU’s Trevin Knell hit a huge three in the second quarter that cut their deficit to eight points. After the shot, Knell turned and said something Alabama’s Labaron Philon. And Padilla fouled him for it.
Whatever Knell said, there’s almost no way it warranted a technical, but that’s what he got, effectively negating the three. Alabama’s Mark Sears went to the three line and extended the lead back to 10 points yet again.
