Arch Manning injury causes concern after thrilling Longhorns win
The Texas Longhorns rallied for a 45-38 overtime victory over Mississippi State after losing Manning to a heavy hit.
The Texas Longhorns secured an impressive 45-38 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday but thoughts will linger over the fitness of Arch Manning after the quarterback took a heavy hit.
Manning was tasked with leading the Longhorns drive on the first play of overtime and dropped back to throw. Failing to see an open receiver, Manning scrambled up the middle but was quickly tackled by safety Isaac Smith and hit from behind by Kendrick Bingley-Jones, a defensive linesman.
That double-hit left floored Manning and he appeared to hit his head on the turf as he landed.
The play ended, Manning initially struggled to get to his feet even after being helped up by teammate Brandon Baker. Manning sat on the turf and the Longhorns trainers rushed out to attend to him. He was able to walk from the field but did not return.
Manning was taken out of the game and saw out the remainder in the medical tent as backup QB Matthew Caldwell came on to throw the game-winning touchdown. Speaking after the game Texas Texas Steve Sarkisian told reporters that he was still unsure of Manning’s conditions, saying: “We’ll find out more when we get back to Austin.”
Saturday’s game was one of Manning’s most assured performances with the Longhorns. He threw a career-high 346 yards and three touchdowns for just one interception. He also ran in a touchdown of his own. Manning was particularly impressive as he led the Longhorns’ fourth quarter comeback, going 12-for-20 for 166 yards and two touchdowns.
