D1 NCAA Baseball Rankings: 2024 Week 5

Wake Forest has been the team to beat throughout the first month of the 2024 college baseball season. They managed to cling onto that top spot in the D1 rankings until they were stunned by number 12 Duke took the series with a 10-8 win.

That loss sees Wake Forest slip and at this stage of the season, with the field around them, one little slip can see you tumble mightily. After the dust settled, the Demon Deacons find themselves in seventh place. There is an argument to be made that they should have fallen even further.

Another team that saw a calamitous week four was Florida as the Gators fell from four to eight on the back of three losses, one each to UCF, St Mary’s, and Florida State. Coupled with three early season games being either cancelled or rescheduled for bad weather, there was just no wiggle room for the Gators left and those losses hit them hard.

But the biggest drop of all was by TCU, who fell from fifth place all the way to 12th as a result of dropping the series to Kansas. The Horned Frogs have a respectable 15-2 record, but so far have not faced the same level of competition as the top ten teams. they have a three game home series with Oklahoma this week followed by a road trip to Oklahoma State. Come through those unscathed and TCU can regain lost ground in the next poll.

Each of the teams around these three managed to slide up one spot, with Arkansas the new number one team in the country. Reigning champions LSU are hot on their heels in second place while Oregon State, Texas A&M, and Tennessee all fill the void.
