Has Georgia ever won the CFP National Championship? When was the last time they won?
The Georgia Bulldogs are on the hunt for another championship when they face no. 3 TCU in the CFP championship game on Monday.
Alabama had a chance to become back-to-back college football national champions last year, but Georgia ruined those dreams, defeating Alabama and winning the championship for themselves. But this year, it’s Georgia who has a chance to become back-to-back champions. They’re playing no. 3 TCU in the CFP semifinal on Monday, January 9 after one of the most exciting semifinal days in college football history.
How many times has Georgia been to the CFP National Championship?
The Bulldogs beat Ohio State in the Peach Bowl to advance to the CFP championship for the third time in their school history. They have won it twice, the first time in 1980 and the most recent, just last year in 2021 under current head coach Kirby Smart.

The 1980 title came not from a bowl game victory, but from being selected by several organizations as the winners. Georgia went undefeated that year and were unanimously selected as the champions.
It was in 2017 that Georgia made it to the CFP championship game and lost, and it was to none other than Alabama. It was a gutting 26-23 defeat as now Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa passed to DeVonta Smith in the end zone on 2nd and 26 to pull off the victory. Then in 2021, they lost to Alabama again in the SEC championship game. But Georgia got their revenge in the 2021 CFP championship game when the Bulldogs won the title. They were down by three at halftime, but outscored Alabama 27-9 in the second half and won their first national championship.
This year, they’ll try to make it to their third national title and make it as back-to-back champions for the first time in the CFP era and the first time since Alabama won the BCS in 2011 and 2012. In the Peach Bowl, Georgia was down by 14 points going into the second half against Ohio State, but they came back to beat them 42-41 to make it to the title game.
TCU, on the other hand, will be looking for its first national title since 1938. In the last five games TCU and Georgia have played, Georgia has won all of them.
