TCU vs Georgia: The lay of the land

New Year’s Eve was a wild one for college football. With two incredible semifinals having been played, the stage is now set for what should be an epic 2023 College Football Playoff national championship game between Georgia and TCU. Where the top-ranked Bulldogs are concerned, they knocked out No. 4 Ohio State by the skin of their teeth, after the Buckeyes failed to convert their last-second field goal attempt. As the ball sailed wide and the clock struck midnight Georgia’s fans and players erupted. With the Peach Bowl now secured, it was on to the biggest party of all.

On the other side of the divide, the Horned Frogs raced out the blocks against the favored Wolverines of Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl, but as is there way, the Wolverines weren’t having it and as such, mounted an immense comeback. In the end, it was a veritable shootout between the two, but the Horned Frogs were able to squeeze past the Big Ten champions 51-45. With all of this said, expect these two teams to truly go at it.

It’s about the details for Georgia

With the Bulldogs on the hunt for their second-straight national title and their third since 1980, they will know all too well what it means to play in games this big. That’s to say, it’s about being nice and tidy. While they’ve got one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Stetson Bennett, this one will likely come down to defensive precision. Enter Jalen Carter. The defensive tackle has been immense when it comes to run stopping and pass disruption. Indeed, few have matched him this season and as such, he will be key to the Bulldogs quest for glory in 2023.

TCU has to trust in its offense

As mentioned above, Georgia is brutal on the pass rush, but that’s not to say the Horned Frogs don’t have weapons of their own. If we take a look at the way in which the Bulldogs could do very little against Ohio State’s passing attack in the Peach Bowl, TCU has every reason to believe they can put one over on their No. 1 ranked opponents. When you’ve got the likes of Quentin Johnston as a wide receiver - possibly the best in the country - you’ve got to be feeling confident. Against the Wolverines, Johnston put in an impressive shift with 163 yards to go with one touchdown. Georgia be warned.

TCU vs Georgia: The Prediction

The reality is Georgia come into the CFP National Championship game as heavy favorites. While it’s true that everything comes down to the game itself, with spreads and statistics only telling you so much, it’s clear that it’s going to take a lot for TCU to prevent the Bulldogs from clinching their second-straight National Championship. Indeed, we’re not sure we can see this going any other way. Our prediction? A 37-23 Georgia win.

TCU vs Georgia: The History

In case you’re wondering, yes, the teams have met on a few occasions before and in each of those encounters, the Bulldogs came out on top. Indeed, Georgia leads the series 4-0. They met most recently in 2016′s Liberty Bowl in Memphis, where the Bulldogs won 31-23. Before that, we’ve got to go back to 1988, when they won 38-10 and there was also 1980 in Athens when they won by the blowout score of 34-3. Their first meeting was way back 1942 when they played in the Orange Bowl on the 1st of January. On that day the Bulldogs got a 40-26 win.
