Update:

The voice opening the College Football Playoff National Championship in Miami will belong to Jamal Roberts, a singer on the rise but one whose path to this stage has been anything but conventional.

Jamal Roberts’ Star-Spangled Banner

Roberts, best known for winning American Idol’s most recent season, has been selected to perform The Star-Spangled Banner ahead of the title clash between the Indiana Hoosiers and the Miami Hurricanes.

The undefeated Hoosiers and resurgent Hurricanes will meet under the lights at Hard Rock Stadium, turning the pregame ceremony into a national showcase long before kickoff, which is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, although in reality it’ll be a good 20 minutes or so later.

Who is Jamal Roberts?

Roberts’ rise has been rapid even by reality-TV standards. Hailing from Meridian, Mississippi, he drew headlines during the Idol finale by setting a new voting record, then quickly pivoted into gospel and inspirational music rather than chasing a standard pop rollout.

His debut single, a spiritually charged cover of Heal, topped Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart, cementing his crossover appeal and helping explain why CFP organizers leaned toward a voice that carries both range and restraint.

Who is singing America the Beautiful for Hoosiers vs Hurricanes?

The anthem will be part of a broader pregame program that blends national ceremony with local involvement. Members of the Florida Memorial University Ambassador Chorale are scheduled to perform America the Beautiful, while Miami-area high school students will deliver American Sign Language interpretations of both songs, a tradition the CFP has been expanding in recent years.
