2023 NFL free agency: Dallas Cowboys to release Ezekiel Elliot | What team could pick him up?
The Cowboys have released the veteran running back to make nine million dollar cap space for the coming season.
The love affair between the Dallas Cowboys and Ezekiel Elliot has come to an end. After seven seasons of being their number one option for running the ball, the team has decided to make cap space for the coming season, in response to the team choosing to stay with Tony Pollard, as their main target when running the ball.
Team owner Jerry Jones claimed at this year’s combine that the Cowboys would do everything they could to keep Pollard and Elliot in the team. But as of yesterday, that didn’t come to fruition.
“We have mutually agreed with Zeke that the best decision for everyone is that he will be able to experience free agency, and we can increase our flexibility and options as well. This is one of the toughest parts of operating a team. Moments like this come, and extremely difficult decisions and choices are made.” Said Jones as news of the team’s decision, to cut Elliot, was announced
But where can the ex-Cowboy Ezekiel Elliot land this NFL season?
The Philadelphia Egles: If this Super Bowl team needed something last year, it was an elite running back. If the team had someone like Elliot, they certainly would have been more competitive in that Super Bowl game. The team has struggled since signing Rashaad Penny, who has failed to stay healthy. Elliot could be just what the team needs.
Buffalo Bills: No one really knows why they haven’t made it to the Super Bowl in the last two years. They have the talent to do so. The Bills don’t run the ball that much, so a guy like Elliot is exactly what they need. Get a guy behind Stefon Diggs who is effective but who is not the main target.
At the moment, it’s a bit early to say what teams need. The NFL Draft hasn’t happened, and clubs still have a lot of work ahead of them. For now, these two are the best options for a player of Ezekiel Elliot’s talent now that he still has a couple of years of good football in him.
