Welfare check leads to discovery
According to Atlanta police, officers were called to a residence in the Buckhead neighborhood after relatives requested a welfare check. When officers arrived shortly after 12:30 p.m., they found Nateal Campbell unresponsive inside the home. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the response, police encountered a man who had reportedly barricaded himself inside the residence. Officers entered the home and took him into custody without further incident.
Brother charged in connection
The individual was later identified as Ciarre Campbell, Calais Campbell’s older brother. The 41-year-old has since been charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony, according to jail records. He was booked into Fulton County Jail early Wednesday.
Authorities have not yet released full details about the circumstances surrounding Nateal Campbell’s death, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Police indicated there had been previous calls to the residence, including incidents earlier this year that may have involved mental health concerns. Officials have also obtained search warrants related to the home as they continue gathering evidence. It remains unclear whether Ciarre Campbell was living at the residence at the time.
A respected figure in the community
Nateal Campbell was widely known as a central figure in her family and in community work alongside her children. Her son, Calais Campbell, is a longtime NFL standout and was named the league’s Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2019. The honor recognizes excellence both on the field and in community service.
He has worked closely with his family through the Charles Richard Campbell Foundation, an organization focused on mentoring and supporting young people.
Family releases statement
In a statement shared publicly, the Campbell family expressed grief over the loss.
“We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell,” the statement read.
“While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father… We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her.”
