49ers rely on others to survive Purdy’s mistakes and beat Seahawks
San Francisco survived turnovers, missed kicks and a late Seahawks surge as defense secured first win of 2025.
The San Francisco 49ers (1-0) opened the 2025 season with a win over the Seattle Seahawks (0-1). Kyle Shanahan’s team pulled out a 17-13 victory in a game that nearly slipped away thanks to two Brock Purdy interceptions and a pair of missed field goals. In the end, the defense forced two turnovers to secure the result.
Purdy purrs early doors
It all began smoothly for Purdy, but his night grew messy. The quarterback put San Francisco on the board with a touchdown pass to George Kittle in the first quarter. Seattle answered through a rushing score from Zach Charbonnet, and the half ended with the Seahawks ahead after Jake Moody clanged a 27-yard attempt off the left upright and Jason Myers nailed a 48-yarder.
Purdy threw his first interception in the third quarter, and Moody’s second miss came when DeMarcus Lawrence blocked his kick. What kept the 49ers alive was a turnover forced by Sam Okuayinonu, who stripped Jaxon Smith-Njigba before Marques Sigle pounced on the loose ball. San Francisco converted that into a tying field goal – a 32-yarder from Moody.
Purdy’s second giveaway with 7:13 remaining set up another Seattle field goal, giving the home team a 13-10 lead with 2:30 left. But the Niners’ quarterback redeemed himself, guiding a drive capped by a Jake Tonges touchdown that proved decisive.
He leaned heavily on Christian McCaffrey throughout. Though listed as questionable with a calf issue, McCaffrey delivered 142 total yards on 32 touches, proving vital to the win at Lumen Field.
Nick Bosa secures San Francisco’s win
The Seahawks had one last chance with 1:34 on the clock and trailed by four. Sam Darnold hit Jaxon Smith-Njigba for gains of 11 and 40 yards, and a Bryce Huff offside penalty advanced them to the San Francisco 14.
That’s when Nick Bosa took over. First he stuffed Kenneth Walker at the nine. Then he sacked Darnold, stripped the ball, and the 49ers recovered. From there, Purdy took a knee to run out the clock and close out San Francisco’s narrow win.
