AFC champs get punished: Patriots face brutal 4-game gauntlet to start 2026

The Patriots face a historic early-season gauntlet in 2026, including four straight games against 10-win teams from last season.

Update:

The New England Patriots are coming off an AFC championship season, but their reward might be one of the most brutal schedule openings the NFL has seen in decades.

A four-game gauntlet to open the season

According to CBS Sports Research, New England will become the first team since the 2019 Miami Dolphins to open a season with three straight games against reigning division winners. That is rare on its own, but what follows is even more extreme.

The Patriots’ first four games of the 2026 season come against teams that all won at least 10 games in 2025, giving them a combined opponent win percentage of .721, the highest for any Weeks 1–4 stretch entering a season since the 1986 Philadelphia Eagles.

  • Week 1: at Seattle Seahawks (14–3, defending champions)
  • Week 2: vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (10–7, AFC North champions)
  • Week 3: at Jacksonville Jaguars (13–4, AFC South champions)
  • Week 4: at Buffalo Bills (12–5, AFC East contender)

Three of those four games come on the road, and all four are against teams that were among the league’s best last season. It’s a stretch that will immediately test whether the Patriots are ready to defend their conference crown—or vulnerable to an early stumble.

On top of difficult opponents, the Pats will face travel challenges as well. Trips to Seattle, Jacksonville and Buffalo in the season’s first month mean long flights, hostile environments and very little time for recovery.

The contrast from last season couldn’t be more stark. In 2025, the Patriots benefited from a lighter schedule that allowed them to build momentum and grow into a legitimate contender, eventually making it to the Super Bowl. They faced just two division winners all season and split those games, including a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers and a dominant win over the Carolina Panthers.

Now, as defending AFC champions, they’re getting the full first-place treatment. Instead of easing into the year, New England will be A four-game gauntlet to open the season, many of whom will view the Patriots as a measuring stick or a revenge opportunity.

What makes this schedule particularly dangerous is the lack of a ramp-up period. There are no “get right” games early in the season. No clear opportunities to experiment or recover from mistakes. Every week out of the gate carries playoff-level intensity, and a slow start could quickly spiral in a competitive AFC.

Even a 2–2 record through the first four games might be considered a success given the level of competition. Anything worse, and the Patriots could find themselves chasing the standings earlier than expected.

While every NFL schedule has its challenges, it’s rare to see such a concentrated stretch of difficulty right at the beginning of the season. For New England, these first four games may ultimately define their entire year.
