A.J. Brown trade stalls: Patriots refuse first-round pick as Eagles hold firm
What seemed like a done deal between WR A.J. Brown and the New England Patriots is quickly turning into one of the NFL offseason’s biggest standoffs.
For weeks, the expectation around the league was that A.J. Brown would be a New England Patriot after June 1. But now, that outcome is suddenly far from guaranteed.
Trade talks between the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles have hit a significant roadblock, with both sides dug in over one critical issue - a first-round pick.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Eagles are holding firm in their demand for a future first-rounder, while the Patriots are currently unwilling to meet that price. And so, a deal that once felt inevitable is now very much in limbo.
Why Patriots won’t meet Eagles’ asking price for A.J. Brown
Momentum had been building toward a blockbuster trade for months. Multiple reports suggested Brown was likely to land in New England, especially given his prior connection to Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. But as negotiations have progressed, reality has set in.
Philadelphia views Brown as a premium asset and wants to be compensated accordingly, reportedly seeking a 2027 first-round pick. New England, meanwhile, appears hesitant to sacrifice that level of future capital, particularly in what is expected to be a strong upcoming draft class.
The Patriots are still building around their young core, and parting with a future first-round pick could limit long-term flexibility. Even for a proven star like Brown, the Patriots seem unwilling to overextend.
There’s also leverage at play. While Brown is one of the NFL’s top wide receivers, the Eagles face financial incentives to wait until after June 1 to complete any deal due to salary cap implications. That timeline reduces urgency for New England, allowing them to stay patient rather than meet Philadelphia’s current demands.
On the other side, the Eagles don’t need to rush. Brown remains under contract, and despite the trade speculation, Philadelphia can afford to wait for the right offer. If another team enters the mix or if the Patriots eventually blink, the Eagles could still secure the package they’re seeking.
What happens next?
June 1 still looms as a key date due to cap mechanics, but even that may not bring immediate resolution. Rapoport noted there’s a real chance this situation drags on, potentially deep into the summer. And with both teams standing firm, the outcome is no longer predictable.
If the Patriots don’t budge, they risk missing out on a true No. 1 receiver. If the Eagles hold too long, they risk diminishing returns. Either way, the A.J. Brown saga is far from over, and it just got a lot more interesting.
