Giants’ Roy Robertson-Harris injury: update on torn Achilles and recovery timeline
The New York Giants suffered a brutal blow to the defense as a key defensive lineman went down with a torn Achilles before training camp has even started.

The New York Giants’ offseason just got started, and already they’ve been hit with a tough blow. On Wednesday, defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris suffered a torn Achilles during Organized Team Activities, a setback that immediately causes concern about the team’s defensive front heading into 2026.

Giants suffer brutal setback
Robertson-Harris went down during practice earlier this week, according to reports, and the injury is expected to sideline him for the entire season. Achilles tears are widely considered one of the most serious injuries in football, with recovery timelines typically stretching well beyond a full year in many cases. For the Giants defense, which is already undergoing major change, the timing could not be worse.
Robertson-Harris signed a two-year, $9 million deal with the Giants in 2025 and quickly became a steady presence on the defensive line. Last season, he started all 17 games and was expected to play a meaningful role again in 2026 as part of the team’s rotation up front.
He had also been working with the first-team defense during OTAs, signaling that the Giants viewed him as more than just a depth piece. Now, that plan is gone and the ripple effect is already being felt.
The injury comes at a particularly difficult time for New York’s defensive line unit. The team recently moved on from star interior defender Dexter Lawrence, leaving a noticeable gap in both production and leadership up front.
With Robertson-Harris now sidelined, the Giants are suddenly leaning even more heavily on new additions like DJ Reader and Shelby Harris, both of whom will be expected to stabilize the interior rotation. At the same time, the development of younger players becomes significantly more important. Sixth-round rookie Bobby Jamison-Travis now steps into a spotlight that likely arrived sooner than expected.
A growing list of offseason injuries
Perhaps just as concerning for the Giants is the pattern emerging during offseason workouts. Robertson-Harris is already the second Giants player to suffer a torn Achilles in recent weeks, following rookie cornerback Thaddeus Dixon, who also went down during team activities.

While offseason injuries are par for the course in football, losing multiple players to the same severe injury type before training camp even begins is an unwelcome trend for a roster trying to reset defensively.
With training camp still ahead, the team may explore internal reshuffling or even late veteran additions to reinforce the defensive line depth chart. For now, though, the focus is on Robert-Harrison’s recovery, and another long rehab process that will keep him off the field for the foreseeable future.
