Update:

The world of professional sport is tough. Within days of suffering a season-ending injury, Tyreek Hill is reportedly being considered for release by the Miami Dolphins.

Hill dislocated his knee during Monday night’s win over the New York Jets, tearing multiple ligaments. He underwent surgery soon after and has been ruled out for the year.

The wide receiver was just beginning the second year of his three-year deal with the Dolphins but he may not play for the team again, according to a new report by CBS News. Jonathan Jones writes that sources within the league expect the Dolphins to release Hill before March 2026, the start of the next league year.

It would be a tough turn of events for Hill, who has been one of the most productive wide receivers during his time in Miami. However his three-year extension was worth $90 million, with a cap hit of $52 million in the final year.

That figure includes $11 million in guaranteed salary if Hiill is on the roster on the third day of the 2026 league year, with a $5 million roster bonus also due on that day. Essentially, that means that the Dolphins can cut $16 million of spending by getting rid of Hill before March 14.

Given the extent of his injury it is extremely unlikely that Hill could pass a medical examination before that mid-March date. Without that security, the Dolphins could choose to move on from Hill.
