Cincinnati’s quarterback Joe Burrow came onto the scene in a big way, making it to the Super Bowl in just his second season in the NFL. This season, he’s continued to turn heads as he led the Bengals to a second consecutive AFC North title. On Sunday, they face the Bills in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Not only does Burrow make waves for his talents on the field, but also the manner in which he calmly deals with the spotlight the whole way through. With the increase in attention, there has also been an increase in the nicknames by which he’s called. We take a look at some of the more memorable ones. Enjoy!

The top three nicknames for Joe Burrow

Whether it’s related to childhood or perhaps even a favorite TV show, it’s always interesting to hear the nicknames bestowed upon top athletes in sports. The Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow is no different. Indeed the quarterback has found himself the recipient of a quite a few throughout his three successful seasons in the NFL. He’s not at all fazed by the nicknames; in fact, it would seem he quite likes them. Join us for a look at three nicknames for the Bengals main man that were too good to ignore.

Joe Brr

It’s all about the ‘ice’ with this one, but the kind of ice that comes in carats. In a reference to all the diamond laden ‘bling’ that Burrow has become well known for wearing in public, this nickname has also put a certain Houston-based jeweler on the map. Initially starting with a chain featuring a small No. 9 pendant, which he wore when the Bengals drafted him, it wasn’t long before he was seen wearing an even bigger version of the chain. Then came the custom JB9 chain which seemed to be a variation of the Nike logo. The fervor surrounding this nickname, however, ramped up several notches when Burrow delivered perhaps one of the best lines of the post season, after the Bengals defeated the the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game in 2021. Asked if the chain created by Houston jeweler Leo Frost was real, Burrow responded with a sly smile, “They’re definitely real,” he said. “I make too much money to have fake ones.”

Joe Cool

In a nod to the camel cigarette ads of the 1980s, this moniker was attributed to Burrow’s now well known manner, which is to say as calm a Sunday evening by the sea. One could even argue that it is perhaps his best quality. “We’ll win a big game and it’s like whatever to him,” Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd said last season after a win against the Jaguars. “He’s already in his playbook looking at the next team, figuring out what they do so we can stay on top of what we gotta do for the next opponent.” Burrow displayed that same sense of peace of mind when the Bengals were preparing to face the Los Angeles Rams in the Super Bowl last year and he said simply, “it feels like another week, honestly”.

Last but not least, this one could be considered an internal one. First used by tight end C.J. Uzomah, there is perhaps not a better nickname for the quarterback. Drafted by Cincinnati as the No.1 pick overall in 2020, Burrow came into a team where the expectation was that he could return them from the wilderness in which they had been lost for three decades. Needless to say, he’s delivered. After suffering a season ending injury in his rookie season, Burrow returned to take his team to within one win of being crowned NFL champions in 2021. Where his teammates are concerned, there has been no surprise as for them Burrow’s ability has been evident since the beginning. “Anything that Joe ever did from Day One never seemed like it was forced,” said Bengals defensive end Sam Hubbard. “It was always natural, just his leadership and the way he carries himself. So I think from day one when he walked in the building people could tell that this was our franchise quarterback.
