NFL MVP Odds: Who are the favorites? Mahomes, Allen, Burrow...

The NFL regular season has ended and there are some clear heroes on the teams left in the playoffs. Let’s look at top candidates in the 2022 MVP race.

Update:

The NFL regular season is over and there is a clear frontrunner for MVP. Typically, we see Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady in the running, though this year, they’re not even in the discussion. A few familiar names are though, and the no. 1 contender is the only one who’s won it once before.

The voting for the MVP awards has changed this season. Under the previous format, the Associated Press had 50 voters who could only submit one name, but now they will be allowed to rank a top five. The voting will be done before the playoffs start and the awards will be announced on February 9, the Thursday before the Super Bowl.

Top four NFL MVP contenders for the 2022-23 season

Patrick Mahomes, QB - Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs quarterback is at the top of the race and has been for some time. The Chief are 14-3 with Mahomes at the helm, tied with the Eagles for the best record in the NFL. They won the top seed in the AFC plus the AFC West title for the seventh year in a row. In 17 starts, Mahomes finished the regular season with a league-high 5,250 passing yards, league-high 41 touchdowns, and just 12 interceptions.

Joe Burrow, QB - Cincinnati Bengals

Burrow led the Bengals to their last (and eighth consecutive) win over the Ravens on Sunday to finish the season at 12-4 and as AFC North champions for the second year in a row. He finished the season with 4,475 passing yards, 35 touchdowns, and just 12 interceptions. Burrow may not be quite up to speed with where Mahomes is this season, but he isn’t too far behind.

Josh Allen, QB - Buffalo Bills

Unfortunately, the fact that the no. 1 seed was given to the Chiefs hurt Allen’s chances at winning the MVP this season. Allen was the favorite to win the MVP at the start of the season and he did have a dominant start. But the Bills had a rough go mid-season which hindered Allen’s chances a bit, too. Though he and the Bills made a comeback with a six-game winning streak to eventually clinch the AFC East. Allen finished the season with 4,283 passing yards, 35 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.

Jalen Hurts, QB - Philadelphia Eagles

Hurts was injured and missed two games in a row, which did hurt his chances at winning MVP but also highlighted how badly the Eagles need him in order to win. With his return in the last game of the season, the Eagles were able to beat the Giants and clinch the NFC East and no. 1 seed in the NFC. He may not be unable to compete with Mahomes now that he’s missed a few games, but he certainly made a great case for himself. Hurts finished the season 3,701 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and just six interceptions.
