Broncos 8 vs 19 Chiefs: summary, stats, scores and highlights | NFL Week 6

Update:

The Kansas City Chiefs stretched their winning streak to five games with a low scoring, less than thrilling win over the Denver Broncos from Arrowhead on Thursday night. Harrison Butker was the difference maker, kicking four field goals in the 19-8 victory.

Slow night on the offensive end

The KC offense has been far from impressive most of the season, and that trend continued on Thursday against Denver. Luckily the defense stepped up and kept Russell Wilson and Co. in check all night.

Going into the Week 6 opener it was the Broncos offense that was looking the more adept part of the Denver team, but against the Chiefs the defense stepped up as the offense sputtered. Kansas City started their first four drives of the game with fantastic field position. Their average starting point was around their own 40 yard line for their first four drives, but they couldn’t take advantage until late in the second quarter.

Russell Wilson struggled to move the ball in the first half, but so did Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs were able to get the ball into the redzone four times, but only crossed the goal line once in those four trips inside the 20. It was Kadarius Toney who made a three yard TD catch to break the game open and take a 10-0 lead on a night where both offenses would struggle.

Right before the half Harrison Butker hit his second of four field goals, this one from 60 yards on a windy night from Arrowhead, to take a 13-0 lead into the break.

Kelce played, Taylor watched

Travis Kelce did play despite battling through an ankle injury all week, and yes Taylor Swift was in attendance inside of one of the boxes at GEHA Field. You wouldn’t have known that Kelce was dealing with an injury, going for 124 yards on nine catches, but that didn’t help the Chiefs put up points.

KC's would continue to flat line on the offensive end, and that allowed the Broncos to try to make a late comeback bid. Wilson, who went 13/22 for 95 yards with one TD and two INTs, finally got the offense moving and cut the 16-0 lead in half thanks to a gorgeous one handed catch from Courtland Sutton and a two point conversion from Javonte Williams gave Denver hope with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Mahomes would drive the Chiefs down the field and set up Butker’s fourth field goal to close the door on the Broncos chance to make a late comeback. The KC QB went 30/40 for 306 yards, with one TD and one INT on one of his less memorable nights from Arrowhead.

The Chiefs are now 5-1 after their fifth straight win, while the Broncos are 1-5 and are dangerously close to falling into the disaster zone they found themselves in all of last season.

as.com

Very fittingly, the defense came up with the play to shut the door on the Broncos. Semaje Perine fumbled the ball fighting for extra yardage and Willie Gay came up with the fumble recovery to move the Chiefs to 5-1 and sink the Broncos to 1-5.

as.com

Wilson had a rough night from Arrowhead, and by the time Courtland Sutton got into the endzone it was too late.

as.com

With the offense nearly at a standstill, Harrison Butker came to the rescue all night, and closed out the first half with this 60 yard field goal. He was 4/4 on the night and should get the game ball after the game.

as.com

Right before the half, the Chiefs punched it into the endzone when Mahomes found Kadarius Toney on this three yard TD pass, but after two quarters the Chiefs were just 1/4 in the red zone.

as.com

On the ensuing drive Mahomes has KC knocking on the door, but his pass was tipped and picked by Justin Simmons to keep the Chiefs within three points.

as.com

It was the KC defense that set the tone early and all throughout the night for the Chiefs. Nick Bolton came up with this interception to give the offense some great field position which they enjoyed for the entire first half, but Mahomes and Co. had trouble getting into the endzone.

When will the nightmare end?

Sean Payton dug himself into a hole in the Mile High City before his first game as head coach of the Broncos even began. He had comments about his predecessor on the sidelines in Denver, Nathaniel Hackett. He was shut up quickly when the Broncos lost to the Jets last week. He had something to say about Tua Tagovailoa when he was still working as an analyst, and Tua hung 70 on him in one of the worst defeats in NFL history. He has had a lot to say, but his Broncos haven’t back him or his statements up just yet and you can tell that the frustration is starting to set in.

as.com

Is she here?

It’s become the headline question of every week in the NFL. Will she or won’t she? Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s romance has transcended the world of sports and pop culture. The Two time Super Bowl champ and the most famous entertainer in the world have linked up and it’s all anyone is talking about. She was at the Chiefs win over Bears in KC, and then showed up to Metlife for a Sunday night game with a bunch of her famous buddies when the Chiefs beat the Jets. She didn’t go to the game in Minnesota last week, but with this being a game back in Arrowhead speculation is building as we approach kickoff. One of my favorite new trends is Swiftie girlfriends telling their boyfriends that Swift has put her BF on the map, and recording their significant other reaction. As of now there is no word, but we will keep our eyes peeled here from GEHA Stadium.

Kelce active

Travis Kelce is without question the top weapon in the Chiefs arsenal at the moment. That’s why Chiefs fans were so nervous when they saw him go down untouched against the Vikings last week. He went to the bench, slammed his helmet on the sideline, and then went to the locker room before the halftime break. He would return to eventually score the game winning touchdown, but his status coming into tonight’s game is questionable. He missed practice on Monday, and went through a limited practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, but he is in the building and ready to go against the Chiefs division rivals.

DangeRuss territory

Things in Denver have not been good. The hope and expectation from last season fizzled fast as Nathaniel Hackett and Russell Wilson imploded for what was one of the most disastrous campaigns for any team in recent memory. The hope was rekindled when Sean Payton was named head coach this offseason, but once again that flame is fading as the Broncos lay at the bottom of the NFL food chain. It’s not all Russ Wilson’s fault. He is tied with the second most TD passes with 11, and has thrown just two interceptions this season, but most of those TDs have been in situations where Denver were down big and having to claw their way back into the game. Tonight the Broncos will try to start strong and keep pace with the Chiefs.

Back at MaHomes

It’s still a work in progress for Patrick Mahomes and his new look offense. There are some big holes to fill from last year’s Super Bowl winning side. They lost their long time offensive coordinaror, Mahomes and his receivers have yet to really click, and other than Travis Kelce, there is no one WR that he can rely on when it matter. Toney has had problems with drops, Moore is still building chemistry with the two time Super Bowl winning QB and Marquez Valdes-Scantling might have the most experience with Mahomes but those two have yet to develop into a dangerous duo in KC. It’s still early in the season and there were a lot of people doubting the Chiefs last year when they got rid of Tyreek Hill. Look how that turned out for the guy from the State Farm commercials.

Chiefs last game

t wasn’t going to be easy for the Chiefs who had to go into Minnesota to play a Vikings team that had won just one of their first four games. The Vikings gave them all they could handle despite fumbling on the first play of the game. Kirk Cousins and the Vikes rebounded to take a 13-10 first half lead. To make things worse Travis Kelce injured his ankle on a non contact play and went to the locker room before halftime. Kelce would comeback and so would the Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes found Rashee Rice to cap off the opening drive of the third quarter with a TD, and Kelce would stretch the lead to 27-13 on a 4 yard TD pass. Minnesota would tighten the game up and have a chance to pull even, but a deep pass from Cousings to Jordan Addison fell incomplete, and a pass interference flag in the end zone on 4th down was picked up as the Chiefs held on for their fourth straight win.

Broncos last game

The Broncos and the Jets went head to head in a battle of futility last week. Throughout the game it seemed like each team took turns making plays to lose. The Denver D couldn’t hold the Jets running game in check, allowing 200+ yards, but they did keep New York out of the end zone on their five trips inside the 20. Russ Wilson and the offense did a decent job moving the ball, but three fumbles cost them dearly, none more than the late fumble by Wilson on a potential game winning drive late in the fourth quarter.

We are live from Arrowhead

Hello everyone and welcome to Kansas City where the Chiefs have rattled off four straight after losing their opener to the Detroit Lions in Week 1. They haven’t looked their best, but they still have the best record in the AFC at 4-1, tied with the the Miami Dolphins. The Broncos have been anything but impressive over the first month of the season. They snuck out a win against the Bears in Week 4, but aside from that it has been a frustrating start to the campaign. They can start to turn the ship around tonight with a shock win over the Chiefs in KC.
