- Battle of the Bays
- Both teams snapped losing streaks last week
- McCaffery gets into the end zone after TD streak snapped last year
- Aiyuk's 76 yard TD catch and run might put this game out of reach
- Purdy's perfect passer rating leads Niners to victory
The rookie, Brown made the play of the day on this 3rd and 6 as the ball hit off a Niners' helmet, bounced in the air allowing the first year DB to make a huge pick in the endzone and secure the win for the Niners in the Battle of the Bay.
The Bucs had their chances to tighten the game, and injuries to the Niners secondary forced rookie Ji'Ayir Brown to play some important snaps late in the fourth quarter. He had this pass break up on 4th down to force a turnover on downs with plenty of time for the Bucs to give the Niners a scare.
Brock Purdy had a perfect passer rating of 158.3 going 21/25 for 333 yards and three TDs to three different receivers. This one went to George Kittle who had 89 yards and this TD on 8 catches. Purdy is the first Niners QB to have a perfect rating since the 90's and it's safe to say that Mr. Irrelevant is back to being Mr. Invincible.
The Bucs would put up a fight until the end, scoring this TD in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. The Bucs run game has been their achilles heel and was again against the Niners. They rushed for just 66 yards on 18 carries, while Baker Mayfield went 29/45 for 246 yards, one TD and one INT
San Fran was held to two field goals after scoring that early TD, but on their first drive of the third quarter, Purdy let loose finding Brandon Aiyuk who took it 76 yards for a TD! He finished the night with 5 receptions and 156 yard, this being his final reception of the night.
This defense was already dangerous, but the addition of Chris Young makes them that much more dangerous. Nick Bosa got to Baker Mayfield and forced the fumble for the first of two turnover on the Bucs day.
Both of these teams came into Sunday coming off of losing streaks, but the Niners still gave the impression of being a team that could make a deep run in the playoffs. The Bucs, not so much.
San Fran punted on their first possession of the game, but Brock Purdy got warmed up on the second drive of the day. He hit Christian McCaffery on this four yard TD pass to restart the RBs TD streak after seeing it snapped last week in Jacksonville.

The line has climbed up to 13.5 in the last few hours as the Niners return home as the heavy favorites, with the Over/Under at 41.5.
That's a a lot of points, but if the Niners continue to play like they did against the Jags last week, this game could get ugly. Their defense is dominant, and their offense is going to put the Tampa D to the test. I like the Niners to win big at Levi Stadium.
San Fran 34-14.
Start of a new streak?
Christian McCaffert’s record tying TD streak came to an end against the Jaguars last week. After 17 straight games of scoring TDs, he was just about the only one who didn’t get into the end zone in Jacksonville last Sunday. The game was over in the fourth quarter, and most of the first stringers were benched, but Kyle Shanahan kept his star RB on the field in hopes that he would set the record, but he was held a yard short on a 4th down and Goal play on the last possession of the Niners day. He joked with reporters “Yea. I suck. Everyone else on the team scored,” as his streak snapped, leaving him tied with Lenny Moore’s record of 17 TDs. If I were a betting man, I would load up on McCaffery getting into the end zone today against the Bucs.
The Tampa Two
The Tampa defense is a bit of a juxtaposition. They are in the bottom 10 in yards allowed per game, giving up 354.1 yard a contest, but they are in the top 10 team in points per game allowed, holding their opponents to just 19.2 an outing. That can largely be attributed to their inability to run the ball. They lose the time of possession battle in nearly every game, which means their defense is on the field a lot, but they hold strong once teams get into the red zone. Against the Niners, the defense is going to have to be at their best, but that’s not all. They are going to need all the help they can get from their offense and the run game.
The Niners have fallen behind in the race for home field advantage in the NFC thanks to their three game losing streak. They are now 6-3 and hold the tie breaker over the Seattle Seahawks for the top spot in the NFC West, but they will be aiming to get back to the top of the table in their conference. They’ve got a huge matchup in a few weeks time, but they will have to beat the Bucs and the Seahawks before they start thinking about beating the NFC leading Philadelphia Eagles. The NFC South is one of the weakest divisions in football, so teams in that division will be gunning to win the division knowing that a Wild Card spot in the playoffs is unlikely. They are 4-5, just a half game back of the New Orleans Saints who are on their BYE Week.
Mr. Irrelevant or Mr. Invincible?
There were a whole lot of people, including myself, who were wondering if the magic was starting to fade for the one time Mr. Irrelevant. He began the season with 9 TDs and 0 picks during the Niners five game win streak, but once he started to throw picks, San Fran started losing. Injuries to Deebo and Williams made things a more difficult but the second year man out of Iowa State was making throws that we were used to seeing him make, some of them very costly throws that led to loses. Last week we say Purdy back to his best, throwing for three TDs, 0 INTs and bringing a calming presence to the offense. Let’s see if he can keep it up today against a stingy Bucs defense.
Baker making Tampa his home
Baker Mayfield looked like the much needed hero that the Bucs were looking for after the Tom Brady era ended last season. Over the first few games of the season, he was doing enough to allow the defense to carry Tampa Bay to victory, and even though the Bucs lost four straight, it was hard to point the finger at Mayfield for being the problem. Through the first three games of the season he had seven TDs and just two INTs, in the four game losing streak he had five TDs and two INTs. It’s the run game that has let Todd Bowles’ team down this season. They are dead last in the league, averaging 78.1 yards per game and have scored only 3 TDs all season long. Rasheed White is the leading rusher for TB, but he has just 429 yards in nine games played, with a 3.3 yards per carry average. Today, Mayfield and the Bucs are going to need White and the rest of the running back room to step up against one of the league’s best defense.
Niners last week
It was a long time coming for the Niners, who had lost three straight games and lost their mojo with Deebo Samuel and Trent Williams sidelined with injuries. Their Week 9 BYE saw both Deebo and Trent get healthy and a trade deadline deal that saw Chris Young come to San Fran brought even more mojo then they had during their five game win streak to start the season. Brock Purdy not only avoided throwing a pick, but threw for nearly 300 yards and three TDs while the new look defense frustrated Trevor Lawrence and the Jags. They sacked Lawrence five times, and held the Jags to just 3 points in the blowout win that made a lot of people jump back on the Niners bandwagon.
Bucs last week
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got their first win in over a month, and they did so by going back to basics. The defense held the Tennessee Titans to just six points and and 209 yards from Raymond James Stadium. Baker Mayfield had his best game since Week 2, throwing for 278 yards and WR Mike Evans accounted for more than half of those yards on the receiving end, putting the game to bed with a 22 yard catch and run TD in which he ran over a Titans defender to put the Bucs up 14 which was more than enough to top Tennessee.
We are live from San Fran
Hello everyone and welcome to Levi Stadium where the Niners are back at home after taking a trip east and whooping the Jaguars in Jacksonville last week. They were on a three game losing streak before their win down south, and shut a lot of the doubters up with the blowout over the leagues hottest team. Suddenly San Fran are back to a Super Bowl favorite after getting healthy and looking like the team that started the season 5-0. The Bucs snapped a four game losing streak of their own, but they aren’t as convincing to get to the Super Bowl or even make the playoffs out of the NFC South. The Bucs defense led the way against a Tennessee team that has their own issues on the offensive end, and now that unit will be tested tonight at Levi Stadium.
