Can the Dallas Cowboys cope after Sam Williams’ season-ending ACL tear at training camp?

The Cowboys are having a tough time at the moment and it appears that things are about to get much worse after one of their stars suffered a severe injury.

As if the Dallas Cowboys didn’t already have a whole lot on their plate. Between ongoing contractual negotiations with major stars and a roster rebuild, they can now add some very bad news concerning one of their defensive stars to the list.

Cowboys lose Sam Williams for the season

Right here and now, the Dallas Cowboys are in the middle of talks with starting quarterback Dak Prescott who recently admitted playing for another team is a possibility, and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who has been holding out of training. Both of men are clearly on the hunt for lucrative long-term deals ahead of the coming season. Needless to say, this is a critical moment for one of the NFL’s most recognizable franchises, one that has not performed even close to the level that its illustrious history suggests it should. Indeed, that’s precisely why the latest news from ‘The Boys’ makes matters even worse for America’s team.

According to NFL Media, former Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate Sam Williams tore his ACL during training camp practice and with that, will miss the entirety of the coming NFL 2024-25 season. As per reports, the 25-year-old was participating in special teams drills when he went to the ground with what appeared to be a knee injury. Medical attention was given to Williams by trainers immediately before he was eventually carted off the field in Oxnard, California where the team is based for training camp.

This is undoubtedly a major blow to the Cowboys’ roster despite the fact that they still have Pro Bowler Micah Parsons. Williams, who is in his third season in the NFL has played a major role in rotation since registering 10 tackles for loss and three fumble recoveries in his maiden campaign which saw him considered for the Rookie of the Year award.

Selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Ole Miss, he registered four sacks in each of his first two NFL seasons, combining for 16 quarterback hits during that period, a feat that is quite impressive when considering that he played largely as a reserve. With Williams now sidelined for the foreseeable future, the Cowboys will almost certainly be turning to DeMarcus Lawrence. The 32-year-old has served as Parsons’ running mate off the edge and has been a long-time servant of the Cowboys with 119 starts during his career.
