Can the Lions still make the playoffs? Will they be eliminated with a loss vs Vikings?
The Minnesota Vikings are hanging onto their playoff hopes by a thread, but they do have a long shot to make it. Here’s what they need.

The Detroit Lions are facing the Minnesota Vikings on Christmas Day, and they are clinging to very narrow playoff hopes. But they are technically still alive entering Week 17. That said, their path is one of the narrowest in the NFC.
What needs to happen for the Lions to make the playoffs?
Detroit’s road to the postseason requires multiple things to break their way, including:
- A Lions win over the Vikings in Week 17
- The Packers losing or tying (vs Ravens)
- Likely needing one more win in Week 18 as well
At this point, Detroit needs both performance and help, with very little wiggle room.
How the Lions could be eliminated in Week 17
The Lions will be eliminated from playoff contention with:
- A loss or tie to the Vikings
- OR a Packers win or tie (vs Ravens)
Their game on Christmas is a must-win no matter what happens, but it won’t be enough to seal a spot. They will have to hope for everything else to go their way when the Packers play the Ravens on Saturday, and for everything to go their way again next week.
