Can’t miss games in the final week of preseason
We are heading into the final weekend of the NFL’s preseason slate, and there are plenty of storylines to keep an eye on before teams make their final cuts.
It’s the final week of the preseason and this batch of games is the most important for teams looking to trim down their roster before final cut day. There are plenty of storylines to keep track of throughout the weekend, and plenty of games that you won’t want to miss.
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Carolina Panthers, Thursday, August 21 @ 7 p.m. ET
No, Aaron Rodgers won’t be playing in this exhibition game either. There were whispers that we could see the No. 12 take a few snaps throughout the preseason, but the 41 year old will be saved for Week 1. This is a team that’s going to be making headlines all year, for the good or the bad and this will be their final warm up before their “all-in” season. The Panthers are looking to be competitive for the first time in a long time, but to do so they will need everyone healthy from Week 1. Don’t expect to see Bryce Young or many of the starters in this final tune up before kicking off the regular season.
Minnesota Vikings vs. Tennessee Titans, Friday, August 22 @ 8 p.m. ET
The No. 1 overall pick has struggled in his first two games in Tennessee. Cam Ward was named the Titans starter before even taking a snap in the preseason, but so far things have not quite gone according to plan. He went 2/7 for 49 yards in three possessions against the Falcons last weekend. His debut was better, going 5/8 for 67 yards leading one TD drive in two possessions. He should another shot on Friday night when the Titans play J.J. McCarthy who is about to embark on his “rookie” year after spending last year sidelined with a knee injury. He’ll have a chance for a final few snaps before Week .
LA Rams vs. Cleveland Browns, Saturday, August 23 @ 1 p.m. ET
The Rams head to Cleveland with the status of their starting QB Matthew Stafford up in the air with a back injury. Jimmy Garoppolo is the back up in LA, and he should get plenty of snaps for Sean McVay who knows it’s a possibility that the former Niners QB could be relied on later in the season. The Browns have named their starting QB, but that won’t take any of the attention off of Shedeur Sanders. Sanders missed last game with an oblique injury and will be hoping to get some reps as he looks to make the roster before cut day. There is an open competition for the back up role in Cleveland, it could end up being Shedeur or one of the other three QBs they have on the roster.
Denver Broncos vs. New Orleans Saints, Saturday, August 23 @ 1 p.m. ET
The Denver Broncos are a dark horse in the AFC this year. After a brilliant season from their rookie QB in which he led Denver back to the playoffs for the first time in an eternity. This year they should be even better and Saturday’s tune up will be a final chance to see some of the starters on the field before the new campaign. The Saints have a whole lot to figure out before Week 1. Starting with their QB1 position. They have three QBs vying for the job, and so far no one has stood out too much. Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough and Jake Haener will look to make a statement against the Broncos before coach Kellen Moore names his starter.
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Miami Dolphins, Saturday, August 24 @ 7 p.m. ET
The Jacksonville Jaguars played their starters last week, everyone except Travis Hunter, who was battling an upper body injury that kept him out of the game against the Saints. If anyone in the league needs to get some reps before the start of the season it’s Hunter who is planning on playing offense and defense. The more chance he has to get used to the speed of the game at the next level will only benefit the Heisman winner.
