Update:

The Dallas Cowboys wrapped up the preseason surrounded by questions, and none bigger than the ongoing contract standoff with star edge rusher Micah Parsons. While fans wait to see whether Parsons will be on the field for the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 4, one analyst has already pointed the finger at Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

CBS analyst says Jerry Jones “played us all”

Appearing on CBS Sports HQ, analyst Emory Hunt didn’t hold back when asked about preseason winners and losers.

“The Dallas Cowboys stood out, not just the entire team, because it’s not about the team,” Hunt said. “It’s about Jerry Jones, because Jerry Jones has been playing all of us for a fool. I am still thinking he’s going to get Micah Parsons signed, but you went through this entire offseason - spring, OTAs, minicamp, training camp - dragging this whole Micah Parsons contract situation along.”

Hunt went on to criticize how the lingering contract saga has prevented Parsons from getting the necessary work with his teammates ahead of the regular season, which is exactly what happened to wide receiver CeeDee Lamb last season.

“If you do sign him at the 11th hour, the opening week kickoff, now he’s going to have to get ramped up in terms of getting ready to play, which could hinder him in having that success right out of the gate,” Hunt continued. “Are we being played or is this deal going to get done? Right now, I would say he’s a loser. We’re probably the losers for falling for it.”

A cloud over the Cowboys’ offseason

The Parsons contract standoff has been hanging over Dallas since the spring. While Jones has insisted throughout the summer that he expects a deal to get done, the lack of resolution has only fueled speculation and frustration. Parsons, a two-time All-Pro and Defensive Player of the Year candidate, is the centerpiece of the Dallas defense and arguably the most important player on the roster outside of quarterback Dak Prescott.

Still, the Cowboys owner has been no stranger to high-profile negotiations, often allowing contract talks to drag out to the last possible moment. Whether this strategy pays off with Parsons remains to be seen, but Hunt’s comments reflect the growing skepticism about how Dallas has handled the situation.

Week 1 ahead

The Cowboys face the Philadelphia Eagles in primetime to kick off the 2025 season. Whether Parsons will be on the field - and in what condition - could shape not only that opener, but the early trajectory of Dallas’ season.

For now, the noise around Jerry Jones and the Cowboys shows no signs of slowing down.
