Chargers vs Jaguars: The lay of the land
In their first post season appearance since 2018, the Chargers are coming into this game with a 10-7 record, having lost their final regular season game 31-28 to the Denver Broncos. The Jaguars on the other hand, finished with a 9-8 record and are fresh off of a 20-16 win over the Tennessee Titans in their last outing. This will be their first trip to the playoffs since 2017. In truth, this one is going to be an interesting duel between the quarterbacks. Though he saw his side lose to the Broncos, Justin Herbert actually turned in a decent performance with 273 yards on 25-of-37 passing (67.6%), with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Where the Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence is concerned, the young signal caller went 20-for-32 with 212 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in the win against the Titans. This is all to say: we should be in for a treat.
Justin Herbert will be key to the Chargers hopes
As we mentioned before, Justin Herbert had a productive outing in the Chargers’ last game - despite the loss - to close the season with a 10-7 and of course, clinch the all-important playoff spot. Under the watchful eye of first-time head coach Brandon Staley who is in his maiden season, the 24-year-old quarterback has overcome a plethora of challenges to reach this point. Indeed, the 3rd-year QB had to recover from a rib cartilage fracture back in Week 2, before bouncing back from a rather scary blow to the head in Week 10. With all that said, Herbert has still managed to write his name into NFL history by becoming the only QB in the NFL with over 4,000 passing yards in each of his first 3 seasons. This season alone, the 2020 sixth overall NFL Draft pick threw for 4,739 yards and 25 touchdowns. Like we said, he’s going to be key.
The same goes for the Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence
It’s hard to believe that the Jags are in the playoffs, when we consider that they were 4-8 entering Week 14. Yet, it’s got to be said Trevor Lawrence and Co. engineered a five-game winning streak, including a hard-fought win against the Titans last weekend and here we are. This is of course a major step forward for a team that had the worst record in the league for the last 8 seasons, with a total of 36 wins in 129 games. Needless to say, times have changed and the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft has been a major part of that. Of course, it hasn’t hurt to have the leadership of head coach Doug Pederson who led the Eagles to a Super Bowl title in 2017. Where Lawrence’s numbers are concerned, he’s got himself 25 touchdowns and 8 interceptions on the season, which to be honest is pretty decent for one of the league’s youngest players.
Chargers vs Jaguars: The Prediction
While we don’t expect this one to be the showpiece game of the Wild Card Weekend, we do think it could be more intriguing than it appears on the surface. On one hand, the Chargers look like the better pick given their clearly superior record and top tier talent. On the other hand, the Jaguars absolutely destroyed the Chargers earlier this season. Of course, that was before the Chargers went on a 5-game winning streak. Ultimately, we’re going with a Jaguars win by a score of 21-20.
Chargers vs Jaguars: It’s been a long time for both teams
When it comes to history, neither of these teams has tasted the glory of winning a Super Bowl, technically. Where the Jaguars are concerned, they definitely haven’t won a championship as they are actually one of 12 current NFL franchises to have never won a Super Bowl. The Chargers on the other hand, have never won the Super Bowl but they did win the AFL Championship prior to the Super Bowl era in 1963, when they were the San Diego Chargers.
