Update:

The 2025 NFL season kicks off with the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on Thursday, featuring the Los Angeles Chargers vs Detroit Lions in Canton, Ohio. The game coincides with Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week, honoring legends like Antonio Gates.

While the game doesn’t count toward preseason records, it marks football’s return and celebrates NFL history. NBC and Peacock will broadcast the event live, with the Sunday Night Football crew on the call. Here’s what you need to know about the game.

When and where is the 2025 Hall of Fame Game?

The Chargers and Lions face off at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on Thursday, July 31 at 8 p.m. ET.

The game will take place at Tom Benson Gall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio as has been tradition since 1962. The stadium sits next to the main Hall of Fame building in Canton.

How to watch the 2025 Hall of Fame Game

The game will be broadcast live on NBC and Peacock. The Sunday Night Football crew will cover the game, with Mike Tirico on play-by-plays, Chris Collinsworth providing analysis, Melissa Stark on the sidelines, and Terry McAulay providing rules analysis.

The game will also be available for live streaming via the Peacock app or on Peacocktv.com.

The significance of the Hall of Fame Game

The game is played in Canton, Ohio because that’s where the league was founded, back in September 1920 when it was known as the American Professional Football Association. This year’s Hall of Fame Game will mark the beginning of the league’s 106th season.

Although the Hall of Fame Game doesn’t count towards the teams’ records, the teams which are selected have a purpose, as they typically have a historical connection to the year’s Pro Football Gall of Fame class.

Among the inductees in the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame is former Chargers tight end Antonio Gates. He’ll be joined by other league icons like Eric Allen, Sterling Sharpe, and Jared Allen.

The game kicks off NFL’s Enshrinement Week, which will run through August 3. On August 1, there will be a special ceremony in which the inductees will receive their gold Hall of Fame jackets, and on August 2, they’ll be officially enshrined.
