Will Mike Vrabel be coaching the Patriots in Week 1? The question isn’t going away
The Patriots coach continues to dominate headlines in all the wrong ways as new details emerge seemingly daily about his relationship with Dianna Russini.

The New England Patriots are coming off a Super Bowl appearance. They have a rising franchise quarterback. A roster built to contend. And one of the more difficult schedules in the NFL ahead. Yet their biggest question this offseason is suddenly whether or not their head coach will return in 2026.
As the offseason unfolds, uncertainty around Mike Vrabel isn’t fading...it’s growing. And with new details continuing to surface about his off-field controversy involving Dianna Russini, fans now must ask if the Patriots could actually enter the 2026 season with a different head coach.
Vrabel-Russini story not going away
The situation has evolved quickly and very publicly. Initial reports centered around photos of Vrabel and Russini together at a resort. Since then, additional details have emerged, including reports of the two spending time together privately in past years. More recently, new reporting, including documentation and footage tied to a boat rental in 2021, has kept the story in the headlines and fueled ongoing speculation.

None of this has led to league discipline. The NFL has treated the matter as private. But that certainly hasn’t made it goes away. If anything, the steady drip of new information has had the opposite effect, keeping the story alive well into the offseason.

The betting markets are already reacting
One of the clearest signs of shifting perception isn’t coming from the Patriots. It’s coming from the public. Prediction markets have seen a notable swing in recent days, with confidence in Vrabel remaining the Patriots’ head coach for Week 1 dropping significantly. At the same time, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has seen his odds rise as a potential replacement.
That doesn’t guarantee anything of course, but it does reflect the growing and very real uncertainty.
Despite the noise, the Patriots’ locker room has projected stability. Franchise quarterback Drake Maye has been openly supportive of Vrabel, calling him “a great human being” and downplaying the idea that the situation will become a distraction.
“I don’t think so,” Maye said when asked directly about the impact on the team.
Would a coaching change actually hurt the Patriots?
This is where the conversation becomes more interesting. On paper, losing a head coach months before the season should be a major setback, especially for a team coming off a Super Bowl run.
But the Patriots may be uniquely positioned to absorb that kind of change. Josh McDaniels is already on staff and has prior head coaching experience. The offensive system is built around Drake Maye, not Vrabel specifically. And the core roster that reached the Super Bowl remains intact. So, the infrastructure is there.

With a much tougher schedule in 2026, there’s no guarantee they will.

Obviously that doesn’t mean a transition would be seamless. A coaching change this late would disrupt preparation, messaging, and leadership. But it does not necessarily derail the season entirely.
If anything, the Patriots’ biggest obstacle may have less to do with Vrabel and more to do with what’s ahead. After their Super Bowl run, New England is set to face a significantly tougher schedule in 2026 and expectations are higher.
That makes stability even more important and it raises the stakes of this situation. Even if the team can survive a coaching change… it would come at the worst possible time.
So what happens next?
For now, the Patriots are standing by their head coach. Vrabel has publicly taken accountability for his actions, acknowledged difficult conversations within the organization, and even stepped away briefly during the NFL Draft to address the situation privately.
But the story isn’t slowing down. As long as new details continue to emerge and public interest remains high, the question will linger.
