The Pittsburgh Steelers got a scare during their second practice session on Friday.

Wide receiver Chase Claypool, called to be the WR1 on offense this year, injured his right shoulder and was unable to finish his afternoon workout.

in a play against the starting defense, Claypool was hit on the shoulder and he immediately asked for assistance from the wings.

Chase Claypool was the second-most-productive WR of the Steelers in 2021, behind Diontae Johnson.

Steelers medical staff checked on him for about three minutes, but Claypool couldn’t lift his right arm, so he walked out of practice and was taken in for X-rays.

Coach Mike Tomlin, however, said there is no reason to be concerned about his star wide receiver.

“Claypool left with a shoulder injury, but at the moment I don’t know how serious the injury is,” Tomlin said after training at Saint Vincet College in Latrobe. “When I have news I will let you know, but I have no reason to be worried at this time.”

Pickett still learning the ropes

Rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett works with the third team, behind veterans Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph.

Apparently at practice on Friday, everything indicated that Trubisky will be the starter when preseason starts, in a couple of weeks.

“Obviously it's only two days. You always want to be perfect, but you're never going to be," Pickett said. "I'm learning the system and it's the first time I'm working with a lot of these guys consistently, so it's not going to be perfect in the first two days, but it's got to get better."

Before the injury, Claypool turned the heat down on the discussion about who should be the Steelers' starting quarterback.

“It doesn't really matter (who's incumbent),” said the Canadian. "Everybody's going to have the ball, all three quarterbacks are going to have the ball, so it doesn't really matter."

“But aren’t you curious, like us, to know how all this will end?, asked a reporter.

“Absolutely, because they have no idea.”
