Cleveland Browns sign Joe Flacco to a 1-year deal. What are the details of his contract?
The Super Bowl winner has now secured a one-year contract with the Browns, a remarkable turnaround for a quarterback who was on the practice squad.
The Cleveland Browns have seemingly found a replacement for injured quarterback Deshaun Watson. Joe Flacco is that man and it seems the veteran signal-caller is worth the spot given his recent performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Joe Flacco signs 1-year deal with the Cleveland Browns
Last Sunday, the Cleveland Browns (8-5) were in need of a win, and quarterback Joe Flacco obliged. Throwing for 311 yards and three touchdowns in the Browns’ 31-27, the 38-year-old made a convincing claim for the starting spot and now it seems the Browns have answered his call. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Flacco signed a one-year deal on Thursday, which includes $4.05 million in incentives based on wins. Of course, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski had already alluded to the move after Sunday’s game, when he stated that Flacco would remain the team’s starter.
Where details are concerned, Schefter also explained that for each win Flacco will earn $75,000. Should he successfully guide the Browns to a wild-card game win, he’ll earn an additional $250,000. As you can probably guess, it gets better from there. Should the former Baltimore Ravens star triumph in a divisional game, he can expect a $500,000 payday. The AFC championship would see him earn $1 million and the big game itself, the Super Bowl? Flacco can expect double that: $2 million.
OK, but can Joe Flacco earn all that money?
It would be stretching to say that he’s got a good chance of doing so, but it has to be said that’s not because he isn’t capable. To be honest, in the two games that he’s played for the Browns, Flacco has been impressive, completing 49-of-89 passes for 565 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. With their current record, the Browns own the 5th seed in the playoff picture with four games remaining. That’s a decent place to be at this stage, but the team has had its struggles, not the least of which is in the quarterback department. Consider for a moment that Flacco is the fourth quarterback to start for Cleveland following injuries to aforementioned Deshaun Watson as well as PJ Walker and rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Nonetheless, here we are and he seems to be doing just fine. “I’m just trying to stay in the moment,” he said, “and be as grateful as possible and keep getting better.” We’re thinking Joe Flacco might be worth keeping an eye on.
