Who are the winningest head coaches in NFL history? Where does Bill Belichick rank?
NFL icon Belichick looks set to return to coaching with UNC, a year after his departure from the Patriots.
Few, if any, would deny that Bill Belichick is one of the greatest head coaches of all time. He won six Super Bowls during his 24-year, era-defining time in charge of the New England Patriots and holds countless NFL records. Could he now be targeting more success in NCAA after reportedly agreeing to become UNC coach?
The 2023 season was his 24th in New England and it proved to be his last, the two parties parting ways by mutual consent. The Pats failed to make the playoffs in his final two years and had not made it past the AFC Wild Card Game since 2018, when they clinched the Super Bowl. Belichick’s six Super Bowl triumphs is the most of any NFL head coach but he sits third in terms of the most individual regular season matches won in the league.
Which coach has the most NFL wins?
The former New England Patriots head coach has an incredible NFL record but he ranks third in terms of all-time wins. He made his coaching debut in 1991 with the Cleveland Browns and was a head coach for 27 of the subsequent 32 years.
In theory, the 72-year-old could still claim the No. 1 spot for himself, but that would almost certainly require him returning to the NFL for another two seasons with a top team to close the gap to the current leader.
The winningest coach in NFL history is Hall of Famer Don Shula, who amassed a staggering 328 regular season wins. Indeed, Shula was the first and only coach to lead a team to an undefeated campaign when he guided the Miami Dolphins to a 14-0 record in 1972. That iconic Dolphins team went on to win Super Bowl VII against Washington.
The only other active coach in the top 10 is the head coach of Super Bowl champions the Kansas City Chiefs, Andy Reid. The 66-year-old currently has 270 wins under his belt and is looking to take the team to a historic three-peat in 2024.

Winning games is one thing, but winning the Super Bowl is a whole other matter. In this regard, Bill Belichick reigns supreme. He is number one on the list with an unmatched haul of six Lombardi trophies and has also recorded a league-high 31 post-season victories.
Reid is going for his fourth ring with Kansas City but, aged 66, looks unlikely to make it to Belichick’s record.
