Update:

The Cincinnati Bengals traded for Dexter Lawrence and made sure he isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Shortly after the blockbuster deal with the New York Giants became official, Lawrence agreed to a one-year, $28 million contract extension, according to a report from Adam Schefter. The update came after the defensive tackle passed his physical, removing the final hurdle in completing the move.

When the Bengals sent a top-10 pick to acquire Lawrence, the move already stood out as one of the boldest decisions of the offseason. Teams rarely give up that level of draft capital for a defensive tackle, even one with Lawrence’s stats.

The extension makes their intentions clear. Instead of treating Lawrence as a two-year rental under his previous deal, Cincinnati has effectively locked him in for three seasons.

Lawrence gets exactly what he wanted

From Lawrence’s perspective, the outcome couldn’t have unfolded much better. After reaching an impasse with the Giants over a new contract, the 28-year-old requested a trade in search of both financial security and a clearer long-term situation. He now has both.

The extension not only boosts his earnings immediately, but also provides stability that didn’t exist in New York, where he had no guaranteed money remaining on his deal. In the end, Lawrence landed in a situation where he is clearly a central piece.

But while the deal works cleanly for the player, it raises the stakes for the Bengals. Cincinnati has now invested heavily in reshaping the defensive front this offseason, adding multiple pieces along the line and then doubling down with Lawrence as the anchor. That approach reflects a clear response to last season’s struggles, when the defense failed to match the level of the team’s offense.

Still, there’s risk involved. Lawrence is coming off a season in which his production dipped significantly, finishing with just 0.5 sacks. While his overall impact goes far beyond raw numbers, the Bengals are betting that his presence will translate into consistent disruption and not just flashes. And now, they’re tied to that bet for the next three years.

Time will tell if the Bengals’ bold move will put them back into contention after three straight years missing the playoffs, but that is clearly the idea behind the aggressive approach.
