The Dallas Cowboys made their star quarterback the highest-paid player in the league when they offered him a four-year, $240 million contract extension ahead of their Week 1 opener against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The contract came with an $80 million signing bonus, the largest in NFL history. His average annual salary of $60 million surpassed Bengals’ Joe Burrow, Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence, and Packers’ Jordan Love, who are all earning $55 million annually with their recent signings. On Wednesday, more details on Prescott’s contract were revealed.

The details of the Prescott deal and the no-trade clause

ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported that $231 million, 96% of Prescott’s contract’s total value, is fully guaranteed. Along with the $80 million signing bonus, Prescott received $129 million fully guaranteed at signing, including his $1.25 million salary for the 2024 season and his $47.75 million salary for the 2025 season.

His $40 million salary for 2026 and $45 million for 2027 are both guaranteed if Prescott gets injured, and will become fully guaranteed by March 2025 and March 2026, respectively. His $55 million salary for 2027 includes $17 million guaranteed for injury and will become fully guaranteed in March 2027.

Prescott’s new deal also includes a no-trade clause and a no-franchise/transition tag clause. A no-trade clause means that the Cowboys cannot trade Prescott to another team without his consent. The no-franchise tag clause means Prescott cannot be franchise tagged.

The contract includes four void years from 2029 to 2032 with the right for the Cowboys to restructure and add more void years as often as they want in order to create salary cap space.
