The Cowboys finished the 2023 regular season 12-5 for the third year in a row, but fell short in the playoffs, losing bad to the Green Bay Packers in the first round, a trend that’s gone on for far too long now. Much of the offseason talk has been about the failure of the Cowboys front office to give contract extensions to Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons. Lamb, of course, won’t be playing and isn’t likely to even be in attendance on Sunday, as he continues his training camp holdout until a deal is done. The other big topic has been the lack of significant roster additions. There are a few rookies and some veterans who will be worth watching to see how they perform in the first preseason game. Cooper Rush and Trey Lance are the Cowboys quarterbacks we’ll be seeing on Sunday, and it will definitely be a battle worth watching.

Like Dallas, the Rams had a good 2023 regular season, but lost in the first round of playoffs. They started the season at 3-6, but had a strong second half, going 7-1 to finish out the season with a 10-7 record and qualifying them for the postseason. Unfortunately, they lost to the Detroit Lions on the road, 24-23 in the Wild Card round. In the 2023 preseason, the Rams got to see how rookie Puka Nacua performed, and utilized running back Kyren Williams more. Both ended up being significant contributors on the Rams offense during the regular season. It looks like the Rams will also be without their star receiver Nacua for Sunday as he’s currently week-to-week after suffering a knee injury in practice. It could be that we see rookie RB Blake Corum do something similar to Nacua and Williams this preseason, so he’ll be one to watch. Quarterback Matthew Stafford is not likely to see any playing time on Sunday and Jimmy Garoppolo is suspended until Week 3 of the regular season after violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. That means we’ll be seeing signal-callers Stetson Bennett and Dresser Winn.

For this preseason game, the Cowboys are the favorites on the road. Though they played much better at home than on the road in the regular season, the Cowboys went 1-1 at home and 0-1 on the road during the preseason. The Rams didn’t win a single preseason game last year.
