Dan Campbell reveals major Jahmyr Gibbs plan - and it changes the Lions’ offense

The Detroit Lions may have just tipped their hand for the 2026 season, and it centers squarely on Jahmyr Gibbs.

Update:

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell made it clear that their offense is preparing for a significant shift in identity. His message wasn’t subtle. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs is expected to take on a true featured role.

“He’s gonna be our bell cow,” Campbell said.

That declaration comes after a major offseason change, with longtime backfield partner David Montgomery no longer in the picture following a trade. For the first time since entering the league, Gibbs is positioned to operate without a true workload split.

A role that’s been building for Gibbs

Even before Campbell’s comments, the trajectory was already pointing in this direction. Gibbs’ usage has steadily increased each season in Detroit. After sharing carries early in his career, he began to take control of the backfield over the past two years, leading the team in touches and expanding his role in the passing game.

Late last season, that shift became even more noticeable. Gibbs was not only seeing more snaps, but also becoming a focal point in high-leverage situations, particularly as a receiver out of the backfield. That evolution now appears complete.

What changes in 2026?

Labeling a running back as a “bell cow” in today’s NFL is significant. Few teams rely heavily on a single back the way they once did, making Campbell’s statement stand out even more. Detroit did add depth behind Gibbs, including the signing of Isiah Pacheco, but early indications suggest that move is about support. not competition for touches.

Instead, the Lions appear ready to build their offense around Gibbs’ versatility. His ability to impact both the run and pass game gives Detroit flexibility, especially with Campbell continuing to have a strong influence on play-calling.

If Gibbs handles the type of workload Campbell is suggesting, it could fundamentally change how defenses approach Detroit. A true three-down role would mean more designed touches in space, increased involvement in the passing game, and greater responsibility in late-game situations.

That kind of usage typically belongs to the league’s most productive backs and signals a level of trust that goes beyond rotational deployment.

Campbell also touched on several other key topics during his media session, offering less clarity elsewhere on the roster. He acknowledged uncertainty surrounding the recovery timeline for safety Kerby Joseph, who is still working back from a knee injury that sidelined him for much of last season, noting the team may not have firm answers until training camp.

The Lions are already dealing with more injury concerns in the secondary, while Campbell also confirmed that rookie receiver Kendrick Law suffered a torn ACL during offseason work, a setback that will likely sideline him for the 2026 season.

Campbell is known for being direct, and he rarely walks back public statements about his players. That adds credibility to what might otherwise be dismissed as offseason optimism about Gibbs.. Now the question becomes whether that projected workload translates into consistent production over a full season, and how far it can carry a team with dreams of a deep postseason run. Either way, Detroit’s plans are no longer a mystery. They’ve been stated outright.
