Update:

The capital of Spain is transforming into a massive open-air festival. Following a grueling, historic 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina at the New York New Jersey Stadium, sealed by a spectacular 106th-minute strike from winger Ferran Torres, Luis de la Fuente’s side has officially claimed the country’s second FIFA World Cup title.

With the golden trophy safely in the hands of La Roja, now comes the celebratory homecoming. Millions of fans across the country are preparing to welcome their heroes back to Spanish soil on Monday, July 20, for an official itinerary packed with royal protocols and an open-top bus parade through the heart of Madrid.

The champions return: Midday arrival

The Spanish squad will depart from the United States overnight and is scheduled to land at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport around midday on Monday.

Upon arrival, the players, coaching staff, and federation officials will head straight to a secure location for lunch and a brief rest period. This downtime is essential before the team embarks on a dense, multi-hour public schedule through towering crowds that have already begun filling the city center.

Royal and political protocols

Before taking the celebration directly to the general public, the world champions must first complete Spain’s traditional institutional receptions.

  1. The Royal Palace of Zarzuela: The team’s first official stop will take them to the royal residence, where King Felipe VI and the royal family will formally receive the squad to congratulate them on their historic achievement in North America.
  2. Moncloa Palace: Following their audience with the King, the team will board their transport to travel to the Moncloa Palace. There, they will be greeted by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for an official governmental reception.

The victory parade route through Madrid

Once the formal protocols conclude, the true street carnival begins. The squad will board a customized, open-top victory bus to parade the World Cup trophy through a city that has been awash in red and yellow flags for days.

The parade is mapped to follow a highly symbolic route through the capital’s main arteries:

  • Start: The Moncloa transport interchange.
  • The Route: The bus will proceed down the historic Calle Princesa, cut across Alberto Aguilera, and push toward the Plaza de Colón.
  • Plaza de la Selección: The parade will pause at the iconic Plaza de Colón, home to the designated Plaza de la Selección. This area housed the massive giant screens where thousands of fans gathered to witness the entire tournament run, making it a highly emotional focal point for the returning squad.

The grand finale at Plaza de Cibeles

After leaving the Plaza de la Selección, the open-top bus will make its final, highly anticipated journey down to the Plaza de Cibeles.

The iconic square, historically the epicenter for major football triumphs in the capital, will serve as the main stage for the evening. A massive festival setup will host the final, main ceremony where the players will individually present the World Cup trophy to an expected crowd of hundreds of thousands of supporters, cementing their status as the new kings of world football
