Deion Sanders’ cancer recovery draws emotional support from Karrueche Tran and fuels relationship talk
The former NFL star’s cancer diagnosis and recovery, plus Tran’s unexpected emotional role, have surprised fans nationwide.
Deion Sanders had surgery to remove his bladder in May following a cancer diagnosis, with socialite and actress Karrueche Tran supporting the two-time Super Bowl winner throughout his ordeal.
Sanders’ recovery from “high risk” cancer
Sanders, who now coaches the Colorado Buffaloes, was the subject of “For Your Glory,” a video series produced by his son’s media company, Well Off Media, documenting his recovery from bladder cancer. It was only revealed the 57-year-old was suffering from the disease on Monday (July 27), although the series features clips taken from the time of his surgery in May.
Speaking in a news conference also on Monday, Sanders’ doctor, Janet Kukreja, revealed her patient had been diagnosed with a “high grade” tumor leading to “high risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer” but that he was now “cured from the cancer” as a result of the surgery.
“I always knew I was going to coach again,” Sanders said after being given the all-clear. “It was never in my spirit, in my heart that God wouldn’t allow me to coach again. I never thought like that.”

Tran unexpectedly features in the video series, with her connection to, and relationship with, Sanders unexplained.
However, she is highly emotional throughout, struggling to speak through tears as she explains to viewers why the former NFL star is in the hospital, and crying as he is taken into the operating room. The 37-year-old’s mood changes, however, after Sanders’ surgery, when she is seen smiling and speaking with hospital staff.
Who is Karrueche Tran?
Tran’s relationship with controversial singer Chris Brown, which began in 2010, first brought her into the public eye, at which point she began working initially as a model and then as an actress.
The couple split after it was revealed Brown had fathered a child with another woman, with Tran later being granted a five-year restraining order against her ex, which expired in the summer of 2022.
She has had two spells appearing as Vivian Johnson in Peacock crime-drama "The Bay," a role for which she became the first person of Asian Pacific American descent to win an Emmy Award for Lead Actor or Actress in 2021. Tran’s mother is Vietnamese, while her father is Jamaican-American, although she was born and raised in Los Angeles.
Tran also played a main part in TNT comedy-drama “Claws” and had a recurring role in drama series "Bel-Air, a more serious reboot of sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”

Sanders won Super Bowl XXIX with the San Francisco 49ers in 1995 and Super Bowl XXX with the Dallas Cowboys in 1996 during a 14-season playing career in the NFL. He is the only man to have played in a Super Bowl and the MLB’s World Series, which he appeared in for the Atlanta Braves in 1992.
