Detroit Lions running back coach praises Jahmyr Gibbs: “He’s one of the smartest running backs I’ve ever coached”

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs had a breakout season in 2024 with 1,412 rushing yards, a league-leading 16 rushing touchdowns, and 1,929 total scrimmage yards. When fellow back David Montgomery was injured late in the season, Gibbs thrived as the lead back, rushing for over 100 yards in each of the final three regular-season games.

Now he’s gearing up for a new season and with a new running backs coach, Tashard Choice.

Tashard Choice already singing Gibbs’ praises

In his first year as the Detroit Lions’ running backs coach, Tashard Choice is already a major believer in Jahmyr Gibbs, calling him one of the smartest and most talented backs he’s ever worked with. Choice, a former NFL running back and college coach, says he’s committed to pushing Gibbs to reach his full potential.

“For him, the sky is the limit,” Choice said. “I’m going to push him. I’m going to push him like no other. I have to.”

Choice was a running back in the NFL for six seasons, from 2008-2013. And last season, he admired Gibbs from afar as the running backs coach for the Texas Longhorns.

Now, he’s focused on helping the 23-year-old star elevate his game even further, emphasizing his intelligence, versatility, and natural football instincts. Despite Gibbs’ standout performance last season, Choice believes his best is yet to come.
