Did Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes compare tight end Travis Kelce to his 3-year-old daughter?

The Chiefs’ signal caller had a funny take on his teammate’s unorthodox play, but perhaps the funniest part is that it helped the team to record another win.

Despite his struggles earlier this season, it would appear that Travis Kelce is back and better than ever. Indeed, that notion was on full display this past weekend as the Chiefs maintained their perfect record with a win over the New Orleans Saints.

Travis Kelce doesn’t listen and it works

Week 5 saw the Kansas City Chiefs take on the New Orleans Saints in a game that proved to be a tough test though the 26-13 score might suggest otherwise. It was a contest that required the Chiefs to try different things and one could say, Travis Kelce answered that call just before halftime. With a deft lateral toss to Samaje Perine, the tight end turned quarterback for a moment as the drive picked up some valuable extra yardage.

The moment in question came on a third-and-22 play, when Patrick Mahomes dished a short pass to Kelce, who then proceeded to cut across the field, avoiding a few New Orleans Saints defenders in the process. Then, came the unexpected as Kelce threw a perfectly timed lateral to Perine, who was able to secure and additional 15 yards. It was on the back of that play that the Chiefs got themselves a fourth-and-1, which they converted before kicking a field goal.

Now, as much as head coach Andy Reid’s playbook is known to have a few head-turners, the consensus at the time seemed to be that wasn’t something he drew up. Naturally, questions were asked after the game and that’s where things got hilarious. Speaking with the press, quarterback Patrick Mahomes explained what he told Kelce before the play, telling the 35-year-old tight end that the team just needed to get into field goal range. Of course, Kelce did that and then some, which left Mahomes comparing the situation to trying to get his three-year-old daughter to listen to instructions.

“I mean, I’m shaking my head because I told him before the play ‘I’ll throw it to you so you can get in field goal range.’ And he underhand shoveled it across the entire field,” said Mahomes. “It’s like I’m talking to Sterling,” he joked. “That’s Travis, man. He’s a special player.” Apparently, he is. Interestingly, Reid disclosed at halftime that laterals are something that Kelce works on during practice. To that end, one could argue that sometimes it’s better not to listen and to just do things your own way. It certainly worked for Travis Kelce.
