Dolphins’ Jalen Ramsey set for surgery after knee injury but when will he return?

No injury is ideal and even less so when it’s one of your best players, but the Dolphins can breathe easier knowing their star’s season isn’t over before it starts.

Following what appeared to be a serious injury suffered during training camp earlier this week, it now appears that Miami’s quarterback has avoided the worst, though he will still have to go under the knife.

Jalen Ramsey to face surgery on left knee

The Miami Dolphins and their fans were given a boost on Friday after reports indicated that Jalen Ramsey will not in fact be out for the season. Ramsey of course, suffered what initially looked to be a serious leg injury during training camp on Thursday. It’s now understood that though the veteran will have to undergo surgery for what is a damaged meniscus, he won’t have to miss the entirety of the upcoming campaign. As things stand, Ramsey will likely be sidelined until December, meaning he will miss the start of the regular season.

How did Jalen Ramsey get injured?

The unfortunate situation occurred when Ramsey collided with wide receiver Tyreek Hill who he was guarding at the time. After going down, it was immediately clear that something was very wrong with Ramsey as he clutched his knee. Once trainers evaluated the 28-year-old, he could be seen hobbling to the cart at which point he was taken back to the facility. Dolphins safety Jevon Holland said at the time that he had talked to Ramsey for a bit after the play, and that they were very much concerned about him. “Everybody’s worried about him,” Holland said at the time. “I’m not a medical professional, so I’m not gonna try to diagnose him.”

What have the Dolphins said about Jalen Ramsey’s injury?

Speaking on Friday, head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed the non-contact injury before adding that the cornerback would undergo surgery at 1:00 p.m. ET. McDaniel then explained that only after Ramsey’s operation would he be able to give greater detail on a timeline for the 28-year-old’s return. McDaniel also disclosed that Ramsey himself addressed the team following the injury.

“What was the most amazing thing about the whole thing was the way Jalen responded,” McDaniel said. “He spoke to the team yesterday and it really moved a lot of people. He first let everybody know how much he appreciated this team and how this team has accepted him and how he has been in the league for a little bit and how he knows that what we’re doing here is special. ...One of the things that he said that was real cool for everybody was he told all of his teammates not to worry and not to feel sorry for him. Whatever timeline the doctors give him, he’s going after that timeline and trying to flex that they’ll beat it and that he realistically couldn’t be more committed and excited to join the team again this year whenever that is.”

Jalen Ramsey is as positive as it gets

Further reinforcing his coach’s comments, Ramsey took to social media where he tweeted about his mindset. “I’ll be back on that field stronger than ever...in due time! This SO minor for God’s child! I trust fully & know He got me! I’m forever grateful to worship His name! I know my brothers gone hold it down until I’m back tho! Appreciate the love & support! Time to get right!” As for what we know officially, it remains unclear as to the extent of the damage in his left knee, however, it’s widely expected that he will require a full repair of his meniscus. Assuming that’s the case, December is a realistic timeline for his return to the field if all goes well.

Ramsey actually only arrived in Miami this offseason, after he was traded by the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long, which is fitting considering that Ramsey is in fact a product of Florida State. The former No. 5 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft is a six-time Pro Bowler, three-time All-Pro, and Super Bowl LVI champion.
