Drake Maye reveals whether shoulder injury impacted Super Bowl LX performance
Maye was sacked six times as the New England Patriots were well beaten by the Seattle Seahawks in Santa Clara.
Much of the pre-game talk surrounding Super Bowl LX focused on whether Drake Maye would be fit to suit up for the New England Patriots after the shoulder injury he suffered in the AFC Championship game against the Denver Broncos.
It became clear a few days before the Super Bowl that Maye would be ready to play, though questions remained over how close to 100% he really was. The quarterback threw two touchdown passes but also tossed two interceptions and was sacked six times as the Patriots were comfortably defeated by the Seattle Seahawks in Santa Clara.
Maye reflects on Super Bowl fitness
After the game, it was revealed that Maye had taken a pain-killing injection to play, although he didn’t want to use that as an excuse for New England’s loss.
“I was feeling like I was able to make throws in the game and was myself,” the 23-year-old confessed.
Pats QB’s next steps
Looking ahead, Maye said he won’t go under the knife to fix the shoulder, believing instead that a sustained period of rest will do the trick.
“Time is the best healer,” Maye said. “I definitely just need time off. It’s nothing that needs anything that needs to be done. I just need some time away and time to get some rest and just time away from football.”
Super Bowl record safe
Had the Patriots defeated the Seahawks, Maye would have become the youngest starting quarterback ever to win a championship ring. The former Tar Heels star won’t get another chance to write his name into NFL history in this particular area, with Ben Roethlisberger’s record of 23 years, 340 days now out of reach.
