Drake Maye’s troubling numbers against teams with winning records
The New England Patriots are getting ready for their 12 Super Bowl in franchise history, and it’s been their rookie QB Drake Maye leading the resurgence.
Foxborough has been buzzing since theNew England Patriots win over the Denver Broncos on Sunday afternoon in Mile High. It wasn’t the prettiest of wins, but they got the job done and Drake Maye is taking this franchise back to Super Bowl in just his second season ever.
The hype might be real
What Maye has done in his sophomore season has been incredible. His individual stats are fantastic and the Patriots turnaround from a 4-13 season last year has been remarkable. The Pats finished the season 13-4, second in the AFC, and are now in the Super Bowl. Not to mention, Maye being one of two players with a serious chance win the MVP.
He came in and took the keys to the car at Gillette Stadium in the early part of last year, and despite his team’s struggles he gave Pats fans hope for a brighter future. I’m not sure if even the most optimistic New England fans would have imagined the year he’s had in his sophomore season. Maye threw for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns and just 8 interceptions. He was top four in yards and top three in TD passes while leading the league in QBR (77.1) and passer rating (113.5).
They have been looking for a replacement for Tom Brady in New England for over a half decade and they seem to have found it. Following in the footsteps of Brady, he has taken the Patriots to the Super Bowl in his second year. But to be like Brady, you have to play like Brady, especially in the big games against good teams, and that hasn’t quite been the case for Maye this year.
But the numbers don’t lie
This is going to sound harsh for a guy that is a game away from winning the Super Bowl, but the cold hard facts suggest that there is a whole lot of room for improvement in those big game situations. The Patriots and Maye have played 20 games this season. Six of those game have been against winning teams.
In those six games, the Patriots are 4-2, but Maye has been far from perfect. Three of those games came in the regular season, two against the Buffalo Bills and one against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the other three came in the postseason. In six games against winning teams He has thrown for five touchdowns, four interceptions, and fumbled seven times. Four of those fumbles came in the win over the Houston Texans, and the Texans recovered two of those.
If we are being fair, he did throw for 268 yards against the LA Chargers in the Wild Card Division. He also threw for three touchdowns against the Houston Texans the next week, and he did run in only touchdown that the Patriots scored in Denver in the 10-7 win last Sunday. His numbers may not be MVP like against winning teams, but he’s done enough to get his team to the Super Bowl. Only question it, will it be enough to win the Super Bowl?
