Inmaculada Sanz, Madrid’s vice-mayor, confirmed on Wednesday 19 October that the Madrid City Council are talking to the National Football League (NFL) in order to reach an agreement for the Spanish capital to hold an NFL game within the next year.

The Executive Vice-President of the NFL, Peter O’Reilly, revealed that the league were weighing up the ideas of either Brazil or Spain as options to host a game in the 2024 season outside of the United States.

Where will the NFL game be played?

In Spain the option of where to hold the game is divided into two: the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, home of Real Madrid, or the Estadio Cívitas Metropolitano, home of Atlético Madrid, LaLiga sporting venues that “are perfectly prepared to accommodate this type of international event”, said Sanz. The Real Madrid stadium and the Atlético Madrid venue have both been recently constructed, with the former still undergoing the final stages of redevelopment. Atlético’s stadium holds 70,460 while the Bernabéu holds 81,044.

I think it’s good news for Madrid that NFL are interested in our city for such an important event as is an NFL game”, said the vice-mayor to the press who were eagerly waiting the news of such exciting negotiations.

This shows once again that Madrid is a fashionable city in the world, a lot of promoters come to us to tell us they are interested in doing these things in Madrid”, she said.

When will the game take place?

We have no information on when the game would potentially take place. As of yet, the news is that the Spanish capital are negotiating with the league, and nothing else has been revealed. As soon as the news is made public, AS USA will be on hand to provide you with all the details.
