George Pickens lands $27.3M deal but Cowboys future remains unclear
The deal is officially done for Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens, but the questions are most definitely not.

George Pickens has officially signed his franchise tag with the Dallas Cowboys, locking in a fully guaranteed $27.3 million salary for the 2026 season. On the surface, it’s a win for both sides. The Cowboys keep one of their most explosive playmakers, and Pickens secures a massive payday.

However, because the Cowboys are not signing Pickens to a long-term contract, that makes this deal a one-year test for the wide receiver.
A contract that says “prove it”
While Dallas had the option to begin negotiating a multi-year extension, the organization decided not to do so just yet. The Cowboys want more clarity before making a long-term financial commitment, specifically about how Pickens fits over a full season in their offensive structure alongside Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.
Dallas believes they can contend with two elite receivers, but doing so under the salary cap requires certainty. And right now, the front office is choosing evaluation over investment.

Pickens is holding out for a long-term contract extension.
Dallas is REFUSING to give him that.

Although Pickens didn’t notch a long-term deal just yet, his path forward is still quite simple, and incredibly lucrative. He just needs to produce at a high level in 2026, and he could be in line for a significantly bigger contract next offseason. Another standout year could push his market value even higher, potentially adding millions to his long-term earning power.
In that way, Pickens is betting on himself by agreeing to sign the franchise tag. It technically gives the Cowboys flexibility, including the ability to trade him. However, team leadership has consistently been saying they have no intention of moving him.
Still, the lack of a long-term deal keeps every option open beyond this season. Once 2026 ends, Dallas will face another set of choices again. They’ll have the option to negotiate a long-term extension, use the franchise tag again (at an even higher cost), or allow Pickens to hit free agency.
There’s also a bit of pressure that comes with this agreement, not just for Pickens, but for the Cowboys themselves. If he thrives, his price tag rises. If he struggles, the decision becomes easier, but the offense may suffer. Either way, 2026 becomes a defining year for both sides.
